Job overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen within our Neurosurgery department, based at the Royal Preston Hospital, for a Junior Clinical Fellow to commence in post as soon as possible.
The Contract of employment will be for a full time, fixed term for 12 months.
This is a Junior Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery role This post will provide you with the opportunity to gain clinical experience in Neurosurgery at the level of ST 1-3 (Junior Level).
You will partake in the junior tier on-call for the Neurosurgery Department during which time you will discharge clinical duties as required and set out in the job description.
This post is subject to the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust Doctor contract. Basic Pay is in line with Nodal point 3 (MT03 which is £43,923 per annum.
Main duties of the job
Organise and perform the day-to-day pre and post-operative care of inpatients as advised and guided by the Registrars and Consultants in the department. You will be expected to be on the ward during the normal working day except for natural breaks and when clinical duties elsewhere so demand.
Clinical Fellows are encouraged to attend the routine or emergency operating sessions, when required or as opportunity allows. A provisional roster is published to specify clinic and theatre slots.

The Department is staffed by 12 Consultants; there are 12 Middle Grades which include 4 Training posts (ST4-8) and 6 non-training Trust appointments, one Research Fellow and one Spinal Fellow. They rotate between each Consultant/team every six months. There are 3 ST1-3 and 5 Clinical Fellows who take part in the 1:8 rota. The role is also supported by Nurse Practitioners.

We support the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal Colleges and are committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
Although these are not formal training posts, this post will allow you full opportunities for training in a structured fashion similar to recognised training posts, including attending clinics and theatres.

Qualifications

- Full current GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS or Equivalent
Desirable criteria
- MRCS Part 1or equivalent
Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Foundation Years Training 1&2 complete
- Basic skills for patient’s daily management
- Previous management of critically ill patients
- UK experience in Neurosurgery
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in Surgical specialties at level ST1-3
- Previous Neurosurgical experience
- Evidence of participation in Clinical Audit

- Examples of use of effective communication skills.
