Job overview

This advert is to recruit for a locum consultant post in paediatric neurology working alongside another consultant. There is the intention to develop and expand the service in the next few years.

The post-holder will work as part of the paediatric neurology team providing specialist services to the local population and to the Lancashire and South Cumbria region. The service is provided on a patch based system, and this post would take the lead for the provision of tertiary paediatric neurology services in Chorley South Ribble. The post holder would be expected to take the lead for the regional tone management service, and other specialist interests would be welcome. 

There is no on call commitment at Royal Preston Hospital, but the contribution to the acute paediatric neurology service at Alderhey Children’s Hospital may be negotiated, providing day time cover for 6 (part time) weeks a year, and involvement in the tone management service.

Involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate education and training is expected, and there is an opportunity to take part in research.

Main duties of the job

Main duties will include:

Weekly general paediatric neurology clinics in Preston and Chorley.

Regular specialist clinics for epilepsy (ketogenic diet) neuromuscular and tone management. 

Joint clinics including a joint muscle clinic with a visiting doctor from Alder Hey and a joint ophthalmology clinic with Mr Chhabra.

3 monthly MDT clinics

Monthly neurophysiology meeting where complex cases can be discussed. 

A requirement to share a close working relationship with the biochemists

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MRCPCH
  • Completed or within 6 months of completion of CCT in Paediatrics and evidence of sub specialty training in Paediatric Neurology or the equivalent (Must be entered on the Specialist Register or entry within 6 months)
Desirable criteria
  • A higher qualification, e.g. MD PhD
  • Completed CCT in Paediatrics with Completed subspecialty in Paediatric Neurology

Experience & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in specialty
  • Wide experience in management of children with neurodisability
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in subspecialty to complement the departmental needs
  • Experience in wider aspects of tone management

Management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Clinical Leadership
  • Evidence of commitment to audit and improving clinical practice/service development
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at appropriate management, teaching, appraisal and mentorship courses.
  • Evidence of the development of leadership within the work environment
