As a Clinical Pharmacy Service we aim to provide an outstanding pharmacy service throughout Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. Recently we have developed an integrated team model working with our EPMA system and digital pharmacy whiteboard to deliver a modern pharmacy service. 

Our Clinical Pharmacy team includes medicines management assistants, ward-based medicine management technicians, clinical pharmacy technicians ,Pharmacists and Pharmacist Prescribers.  

This post is based across both sites - Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital.  Flexible working hours are considered, our ideal candidate would be able to work  between the hours of  8am and 7:30pm.  Usual finish times would be no later than 5:30pm, however a late night up to 7:30pm one day a week would be required. Full time positions could be over 4 or 5 days. 

Candidates that do not meet all essential criteria are considered however would be paid on a band 4 salary until essential training criteria has been met. You will be required to complete our in house band 4 to 5 progression pathway (See person specification).

Medicines Management Technicians have the opportunity to rotate through more specialised areas such as ward based Oncology, Neurology, Major Trauma, Renal, Paediatrics and work within our Pharmacy Chemotherapy Unit. 

Pharmacy LTHTr supports ongoing training and qualifications of our Pharmacy Technicians and leads the way developing Medicine Management Technicians. Recently five of our MMTs have been supported to enrol and complete their clinical diploma, and have since progressed to be band 6 Clinical Pharmacy Technicians. There is also a requirement to work one Saturday or Sunday cross site every five weeks (you’ll then get a day off the following week) and to work one bank holiday a year.  Weekend and Bank Holiday shifts have additional pay rates.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your role will include but is not limited to:

  • Performing drug history and completing medicines reconciliation.
  • Assessment of patients own medicines.
  • Utilising Our award winning Pharmacy Whiteboard for daily prioritisation. 
  • Involvement in continuous improvement projects.
  • Effective and timely ordering of patients medications.
  • Patient counselling
  • Providing essential, accurate discharge information to support the electronic discharge process at ward level
  • Carry out final accuracy checking of prescriptions in the dispensary, on the ward and in our satellite pharmacies.
  • Providing line management and leadership to Medicine Management Assistants. 
  • Providing training and mentorship to pharmacy trainees
  • Management of chemotherapy planning, accuracy checking and dispatching of medication. 

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or other recognised Pharmacy Technician Qualification meeting requirements for registration with GPhC
  • Registered with the GPhC
  • Pharmacy Technician Accuracy Checking Certificate equivalent to the National Framework with 12 months registered experience or willingness to complete band 4 to 5 progression pathway (as per job advert band 4 payment until completion of progression pathway).
Desirable criteria
  • Post-Graduate Leadership and Management Development qualification
  • APTUK Member
  • Medicines Management Accreditation (to include Drug History taking and Medicines Reconciliation)

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of Medicine Management processes undertaken as a registered Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience of medicine management
  • Experience working within GDP guidelines
  • Knowledge of medicines legislation and clinical governance
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Experience with IT and Computer systems, including Pharmacy specific systems
  • Knowledge of HR policies and legislation
  • Knowledge of COSHH Regulations
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and practical experience of managing staff and resources
  • Experience in using electronic patient records systems
  • Experience with automated pharmacy systems
  • Leadership experience and knowledge of people management
