Job overview
We are seeking a General Plastic Surgery Specialist Grade, aimed at a senior person who has the capability to independently manage routine Plastics Surgery cases and take named individual responsibility for such patients.
The main objective of the role would be to address clinic demands and take responsibility for the management of routine spinal procedures in elective patients.
There is an on-call commitment related to this post. The role may require involvement in managing acute patients during on call take, and planned trauma lists.
At present, it will be working on a flexible job-plan pending further review.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:-
- Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the delivery of the plastic surgery service for the Directorate.
- Provide direct input to patients, contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and participate in the delivery and development of management strategies for routine plastic surgery conditions, both elective and emergency.
- Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
- Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
- Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

This post will be subject to further development as per the departmental requirements.
The emphasis will be on addressing the clinic capacity need and providing theatre provision, including elective theatres on weekends.
The position will require independent named patient management and clinical activity. Working within the team structure will be expected.
This appointment is designed to:
- Improve general plastic surgery services in Lancashire and South Cumbria in line with 18-week Referral to Treatment targets.
- Support the delivery and development of the routine elective plastic outpatient and theatre capacity
- Provide support for urgent/emergency cases but does not involve any on-call commitment.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust forms one of the major acute Trusts in the North West with all of the usual specialties on site as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the departments of Neurosciences, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Renal Medicine.
Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in 2003 and the Trust has active and developing links with Universities of Manchester and Central Lancashire.
The Trust has been designated as a Major Trauma Centre

Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- FRCS (Plastic Surgery ) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- On the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery
Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to offer opinion on and take independent responsibility for elective and emergency problems in general plastic surgery
- Experience at Registrar level in Plastic Surgery for 6 or more years
- Previous UK experience in the speciality for more than 24 months
- To have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification
