We have an exceptional opportunity for a suitably qualified and highly experienced Respiratory Physiologist to contribute to the Respiratory Physiology service within the recently established Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Preston.

This represents a compelling chance for an individual with robust clinical expertise and leadership acumen to assume operational leadership responsibilities and provide support to the newly introduced community diagnostic service. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless and efficient operation of the service, with a dedicated commitment to ongoing improvement and development aligned with the evolving needs of our patients in the future.

Main duties of the job

To provide professional leadership, guidance, development and support for the Respiratory and Sleep Physiology department, ensuring the provision of excellent care and quality assured diagnostics. 

To monitor and improve the efficient and effective management of resources and laboratory environment so that staff and services are able to meet the needs of the patients.

You will ensure staff and services are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care in line with trust values, governance framework, CQC standards, Nice guidance, ARTP, BTS,ERS ATS standards.

It is one of the largest providers of healthcare in the area and has a complement of over 1100 beds for a local population of 390,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million.

The ‘Lancashire Chest Centre’ offers tertiary services in several sub-specialties of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. You will be joining a thriving team which comprises of 10 Respiratory Consultants across the two hospital sites. This post is based at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Services are currently provided across both Chorley and Preston sites and this post will also cover the service provided within the CDC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Ensuring the Physiology team and support staff are appropriately resourced and organised for the maximum benefit of patients.
  • Leading and developing staff by being a role model providing clinical and managerial leadership, support and direction, ensuring opportunities for research and development, supporting staff to reach their full potential
  • Working towards the highest standard of care and implementing audit and peer review programmes.
  • Ensuring continued development of services and service pathway to ensure continued best practice, innovation and efficiency whilst putting the patients at the centre of everything we do.
  • Be responsible for the management of the department budget and delivery of efficiency savings
  • Be responsible for the delivery of activity, waiting list and waiting time targets
  • To coordinate and take part in research projects and CPD
  • Undertake training of staff from both within and outside the department.

Person specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • • Degree in Clinical Physiology, PTP or equivalent
  • • RCCP registration or equivalent.
  • • ARTP parts 1 and 2 or specialist knowledge in practical and theoretical respiratory analysis including relevant disorders
  • • STP/Equivalence or evidence of continued relevant postgraduate professional development
  • • ILM level 3 or equivalent in NHS Management
Desirable criteria
  • • Undertaking MSc
  • • RCCP registration
  • • Coaching/ mentoring qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Appropriate post qualification experience in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology as a qualified Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist
  • • Able to perform all investigations listed on the job description and provide evidence of competence
  • • Evidence of Management of part of a service including staff management
  • • Understanding of Trust policies and Procedures
  • • Evidence of own CPD
  • • IT literate
  • • Evidence of participation in audit
  • • Evidence of teaching and mentoring staff
  • • Evidence of managing change
Desirable criteria
  • • Familiar with equipment routinely used in the department
  • • Evidence of published articles
