Our Surgical Assessment Unit is a busy proactive area specialising in Emergency treatments and assessments for a variety of Surgical specialities. We are an established team and although it is a very busy and demanding ward we work closely as a team and deal with the day to day pressures with positivity and high levels of energy.
We are one of the largest and highest performing trusts in the country, providing district general hospital services to 370,000 people in Preston and Chorley, and specialist care to 1.5m people across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for providing a range of personalised care for patients and a range of clinical duties under the guidance and supervision of the Ward Manager, including auditing, improving patient experience and flow through admissions and discharges, and that the nursing team are supported to undertake the daily tasks on the ward.
Experience of working with Surgical patients in a hospital setting would be beneficial, however it is not essential.
You will need to be flexible in your working hours to work shifts/unsocial hours including nights as required. You must have a willingness to undertake further training to support the team in the management of patients with a variety of surgical conditions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
-Contribute to the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines under supervision.
-Support and provide patient education and health promotion.
-Support the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice.
-Contribute to the management of risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
-Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
-Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
-Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.
-Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.
-Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
-Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
-Maintain and develop own professional competence and skills within scope of role.

Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- Appropriate NMC Registration
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing
- NMC recognised Mentorship qualification
- Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality
Desirable criteria
- Post registration qualification in area of speciality area
- Degree
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of leadership experience and learning
- Awareness of recent advances within Nursing practice
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
- Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice
- Knowledge of Ethical issues
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
- Knowledge of Research and Development

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
