Junior Clinical Fellow in Vascular

NHS Medical & Dental: Junior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

We have an opportunity for a Junior Clinical Fellow to join the Team, following a major review of vascular services, which has led to the designation of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a major Vascular Intervention Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria. The new Vascular Centre serves the populations of neighbouring hospitals in Wigan, Blackpool and Morecambe Bay, a population of approximately 1.5 million. This is a Full-time post.

Out-patient, day-case and diagnostic work continues in these local trusts, with Vascular Consultants bringing all elective inpatient cases to the centre, as well as participating in an emergency vascular on-call rota, all emergencies coming to the centre. This model conforms to the “hub and spoke” network recommended by the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

The new appointee will have duties in the hub. The network has a total of twelve Vascular Consultants, and the successful candidate will be part of the team, that includes 9 Middle Grades as well, working across the four trusts, participating in a “Surgeon of the Week” and a separate night / weekend rota.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:-
Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in planning, development and delivery of the vascular service at a time when the organisation of vascular services is undergoing great change.

Participate in the weekly network MDT meetings with colleagues from all disciplines involved in the care of vascular patients.

Provide activity support in the non-intervention centre hospital trusts. The final detail will be negotiated and agreed with the successful applicant.

The successful applicant will work primarily on the ward, supporting elective and non-elective activities. The surgeon of the week (SOTW), whose routine duties are cancelled for the week, is responsible for daily ward rounds, assisting assessment of emergency admissions and assisting emergency interventions.

The post-holder is likely to have day case and out-patient duties in the spoke trusts and affiliated hospitals, and he / she will be assist in assessing in-house referrals arising at these sites. The successful appointee will also have theatre rota, both elective (vascular, hybrid and IR theatre) and emergency theatre.

This post will allow the successful candidate to enhance their research portfolio prior to obtaining an ST3 post in Vascular Surgery.

Other duties will involve supervision of the FY1 doctors and assisting in pre-op clinics.

Working for our organisation

Modern education centres are based at the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/internet support for hospital doctors and GPs as well as other medical and dental practitioners.

The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Surgeons and is committed to providing time and support for these activities.

You will receive the full support of the Trust and the Directorate to develop specialist areas of interest in line with Directorate business plans and the development of services generally within the Trust

The new hybrid operating theatre has built-in video facilities for teaching purposes and video-linkage to the Education Centre is planned.

The CT posts are all recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons for training and currently the SpR posts at Preston and the two SpR Upper GI posts are recognised by the SAC for training and are filled by registrars on rotation from the Manchester training scheme.

These posts are subject to the National Terms and Conditions of service for Hospital medical and dental staff - England and Wales (2002) and remuneration will be as set out in the NHS Medical and Dental pay circular.

The contract may be supplemented or amended by local collective agreements reached with trade unions recognised by the Trust and the rules and resolutions of the Trust Board.
