Welcome to our Vascular Specialist Nurse Team!

Lancashire Teaching hospital is designated as one of the major vascular centres in the country. The agreed footprint of services is a ‘hub and spoke’ arrangement with the hub being based at Preston. We offer support to patients with vascular conditions covering a population of 1.5 million people from Barrow, Kendal, Lancaster, Blackpool, Preston/Chorley and Wigan providing both outpatient clinics and surgery across this area.

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Vascular team at Royal Preston hospital. We have a vacancy for highly motivated Band 3 Health Care Assistant 37.5 hours (5 days per week) and are seeking individuals who would like to expand their knowledge in vascular services or develop new skills. The post involves supporting the vascular nurse specialist team in the daily running of their nurse-led clinics and when reviewing inpatients. The role involves both administrative and clinical duties.

Main duties of the job

This job is a combined role of approximately 70% administrative and 30% clinical duties to enable the smooth running of our multiple nurse-led outpatient clinics.

Your role requires completing administrative duties to include preparing, organising and storing patient information on paper and digital form, dealing with queries on the phone and by email, booking patient appointments and liaising with the multi-disciplinary team.

In addition to administrative duties your role with include clinically helping and supporting the vascular specialist nurses in clinics carrying out band 3 nursing responsibilities with extra training in specialist care.

You will demonstrate excellent organisational skills, must be flexible in approach, able to exercise initiative and demonstrate a consistently high standard of professionalism, being aware of the need for confidentiality and integrity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

·         Provide administrative duties in the daily running of nurse-led vascular clinics

·         Manage telephone enquires in a polite and efficient manner

·         Review patient records and data to ensure accuracy and updating trust systems to reflect any updated information

·         Make/amend/cancel patient appointments for nurse led clinics and liaise with outpatient booking services to ensure smooth running of patient appointments

·         Be the point of contact for all day to day enquires, referring when necessary to more senior staff

·         Utilisation of local or trust case note tracking system

·         Work under the direct supervision of the vascular nurse specialists

·         Undertake clinical duties relevant to clinical area following achievement of competencies

·         Take observations from patients

·         Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with agreed local and national standards

·         Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines

·         Assist in maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care

·         Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals

·         Contribute to maintaining safe, clean, and productive care environment, complaint with standards for hygiene and cleanliness

·         Maintain and develop own competence

·         Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager

·         Undertake any training/skills deemed appropriate

 

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths & English grade C or above / Grade 4 - 9 OR Functional/Key skills level 2 numeracy and Functional/Key Skills level 2 literacy
  • BNCS or NVQ / Internal Level 2 training programme in Health and Social Care
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 QCF diploma (Qualification Credit Framework) in healthcare / NVQ level 3

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • Understanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA
