The Interventional Radiology day case unit (IRDU) is situated in main X-ray RPH.

We are looking for someone who is caring, compassionate and loves the challenge of a busy day case unit. You will be guided in your role by a fantastic, friendly team of nurses, radiographers and consultants.

For this role you will have to demonstrate previous acute experience, excellent communication skills, display a positive professional manner, be adaptive to change and have the drive and commitment to provide the best possible care for patients.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a fantastic, well led team who care for a wide range of patients during their visits to interventional radiology.

As a senior health care assistant you will support the nurses to provide high standards of care to our patients which will include:

Welcoming patients to the day case unit

Preparing patients for procedures including angiograms/biopsies/drains/vascular access

Care for patients post procedure

Discharging patients following recovery.

You will be responsible for providing a range of personalised care for patients including assisting with personal hygiene, toileting, moving and handling, catheter and drain care, NEWS observations, chaperoning patients, transferring patients, venepuncture & cannulation, if/once trained.

You will support the productive operation of the department by undertaking a range of non- clinical activities which contribute to the maintenance of a safe and clean environment ensuring we are fully compliant with audit and trust standards and maintain our GOLD STAR award.

You will also assist the department administratively, following full training, utilising Harris FLEX, SECTRA & stock ordering systems such as ATTICUS & Oracle.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties to include but not be limited to:

  • Take samples from patients for testing or dispatching eg:  Urine, sputum, faeces, MRSA swabs, blood sugars
  • Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with agreed local and national standards.
  • Assist patients to meet nutritional needs in line with their individual care plan.
  • Undertake clinical duties relevant to clinical area following achievement of competencies.
  • Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to  health,  safety  and  security  legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
  • Contribute to maintaining safe, clean, and productive care environment, compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Promote  equality  in  care  and  practice  by recognising,  respecting  and  meeting  the needs and choices of individuals.
  • Maintain and develop own competence.

  • Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths & English grade C or above OR level 2 numeracy skills and level 2 literacy skills
  • BNCS or NVQ in Health Level 2
  • Must be willing to undertake Trust internal INCS course
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 QCF diploma (Qualification Credit Framework) in healthcare / NVQ level 3

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
  • Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
  • Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
  • Understanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA
Desirable criteria
  • Previous hospital experience
