Job overview

The position is a Substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in glaucoma, you will have substantial surgical and clinical experience in glaucoma diagnosis and management, ideally within the UK The post is based at our main Ophthalmic site, Boston House in Wigan with onsite parking facilities. Working in collaboration with Edge Hill University this post offers 2 PA per week dedicated to holding position as a senior lecturer at Edge Hill University Medical School, under an Honorary Contract . Clinical duties will take place at the main site Boston House, with regular travel to other sites, in particular Leigh Infirmary where surgery is performed in our dedicated Day Case Unit , this unit was awarded GIRFT Hub Accreditation in 2024. We a recurrently expanding our Ophthalmology capacity to support increasing referrals from within GM into our service.

Main duties of the job

Lead and develop a specialised Glaucoma service for the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of patients who present with all forms of glaucoma. With the current backlogs, there is much enthusiasm to expand virtual glaucoma clinics and care Participate on a weekly basis in the running of the Urgent Referral Clinic. Accept personal responsibility for the total clinical care of patients referred to them. Contribute to and participate in the development of the service and assist in the delivery of the national 18-week programme. Collaborate positively with colleagues to provide effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the service. Work collaboratively with all staff to establish and sustain a team approach in managing waiting lists, reducing waiting times and ensuring essential services are delivered in line with the Department’s and Trust’s protocols and patient charter/service requirements. Contribute to Clinical Governance, Clinic Audit and evidence-based practice within the department. Participate in teaching of undergraduates and postgraduates and other health care professionals. Provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors and to facilitate the expansion of the role of Non-Medical Practitioners. To contribute to the management of ophthalmic services within the Trust. Participate regularly in departmental case review meetings.

Participate on a weekly basis in the running of the Urgent Referral Clinic. Contribute to Clinical Governance, Clinic Audit and evidence-based practice within the department. To always promote the Equality Agenda. Participate in teaching and supervision of undergraduates and postgraduates and other health care professionals. To fully embrace the flexible working practices of the department. To actively support the Clinical Director/Clinical Lead and Trust in continually developing the service, introducing new innovations and working practices and continually improving efficiency. To participate actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full registration with GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Specialty specific exams

Experience

  • Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience
  • Proven Clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with a broad experience of the specialty
  • Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
  • Able to plan and develop the service
  • Experience of working in and leading a multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives

Skills

  • Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies
  • Experience in teaching junior medical staff
