Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse

NHS AFC: Band 6

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

Ward 10 is a busy surgical ward with capacity for 20 patients. The ward predominantly specialises in bowel and renal surgery. The ward is also busy accepting patients presented through the Paediatric Emergency department with a wide variety of medical conditions.  This  provides staff with an environment for continuous learning and development.

As a Deputy Sister/Deputy Charge Nurse you will work closely with the Ward Sister to ensure that our patients consistently receive high quality care.  This will be achieved through role modelling high quality care, supervising and supporting junior team members, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to optimise our patient's well-being and positive patient and family experience.

You will also be responsible for undertaking audits to evidence our care, and service development projects whilst also supporting the Ward Sister with management aspects of the ward including sickness absence, appraisals, recruitment and performance management.

Main duties of the job

- Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of evidence based nursing care to a group of patients

- Leadership and supervision of others carrying out all aspects of the caring process

-Maintain specialist clinical competence including taking change in the absence of the Ward/Unit Manager who has 24 hours accountability and responsibility

- Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care

- Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team

- Actively contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision to meet the needs of patients, service users and their families

- Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement and participate in the education, development, and mentorship of other staff

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
