Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Specialist Midwife or Project Lead as the UHL Maternity Tobacco Dependency and Treatment Service Lead. The post is a fixed-term contract for 23 months.

The role of the UHL Maternity Tobacco Dependency and Treatment Service (TDTS) Lead will be to manage and lead the UHL maternity TDTS which provides tobacco dependency support, advice and treatment to pregnant smokers and their partners.

This post will be based in the maternity department at UHL (University Hospitals of Leicester) and be responsible for ensuring smooth delivery of the service. 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

  • Support the coordination and delivery of the UHL maternity TDTS, Smoke Free Hospitals and other related projects and initiatives across Leicester City/County Council. 

  • Aid in the development of new service initiatives related to reducing smoking in pregnancy in the community and hospital settings.

  • Manage, monitor and oversee referrals for the UHL maternity tobacco dependency and treatment service. This includes the maternity CURE inpatient MECC referrals, community booking referrals and any other antenatal referrals. 

  • Operationally manage the tobacco dependency advisor team at UHL to ensure service delivery 

  • Support the tobacco dependency advisors in the delivery of the maternity TDTS service through advice, guidance and support

  • Manage and respond to any patient complaints, working alongside the wider maternity team

  • Chair maternity TDTS team meetings and other meetings related to the service

  • Work with national and regional smoking in pregnancy leads to gain insight into service developments

  • Data reporting and analysis between maternity and the local authority.

  • Support audit midwife to ensure compliance with Smoking cessation guidance.

  • Active member of maternity Quality improvement work stream 4, Saving Babies Lives care bundle version 3.

  • Adopt a range of the Caring At Its Best principles appropriate to client group in order to improve and streamline care to women, birthing people and families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Become a visible and accessible profile for maternal smoking at UHL.

  • Keep up to date with local and national smoking cessation training, public health training, midwifery training and trust training modules.

  • Deliver the objectives, developing and promoting the service, both to health care professionals and pregnant smokers and their families through training and communication channels.

  • Identify the training and educational needs for all maternity staff in relation to smoking in pregnancy.

  • Co-ordinate, oversee and deliver maternity staff training at various mandatory and one-off training sessions throughout the year on the importance of reducing smoking in pregnancy.

  • Support maternity staff to provide smoking cessation advice by providing clinical advice and support to healthcare professionals across the maternity unit. 

  • Support the training of the maternity tobacco dependency advisors.

  • Oversee communication and marketing of service across multiple organisations.

  • Ensure advisors have sufficient supply of communication material required for the service.

  • Oversee and distribute service case studies from the team to stakeholders.

  • Ensure the maternity department are adhering to standards, guidelines and policies.

  • Recruit, engage and utilise UHL smokefree pregnancy champions network.

  • Stay up to date on national guidance related to smokefree pregnancies. Work collaboratively to distribute any changes required to the maternity TDTS to multiple organisations.

  • Maintain regular reporting of the service to your line manager and stakeholders.

  • Oversee and maintain national data reporting to NHSE.

  • Ensure national targets for reducing smoking in pregnancy are met at trust level.

  • Oversee and maintain local data reporting to governance boards across the multiple organisations. This will include the preparation of accurate and concise verbal or written reports.

  • Lead and conduct QI projects and audits related to reducing smoking in pregnancy at the trust.

  • Carry out other miscellaneous duties associated with the role.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of post -registration education.
  • Qualified to degree level with a high proportion of IT content or equivalent skills
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of other professional managerial qualifications.
  • Teaching and assessing/mentor qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous comprehensive midwifery experience.
  • Evidence of the application of management/ leadership experience and autonomous clinical practice
  • At least one year experience in a project management role exposed to clinical and patient administration systems.
Desirable criteria
  • Development of multi-disciplinary working practices.
  • At least 1 year experience with working with major healthcare system providers within the NHS as a project manager

Planning & Organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work as part of a team and act on own initiative
  • Communicating effectively with women, staff and other agencies.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to supervise and demonstrate potential to lead
