Job overview

Applications are invited for whole-time or part-time consultant in Paediatric Gastroenterology. This will be a substantive permanent post. This opportunity has arisen due to retirement of a consultant colleague. 

 You will join 3 consultants and a team of paediatric gastroenterology specialist nurses, paediatric surgery specialist nurses, a specialist gastroenterology dietitian, a PN and gastroenterology pharmacist and full support staff. 

We provide services for children and families in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and further afield. We are a GRID training centre, and provide a full range of tertiary gastroenterology services including managing IBD, intestinal failure including Home PN, and full range of gastroenterological conditions. Day case Investigations and treatments are done on our daycare ward. 

Main duties of the job

Our working week includes management of inpatients, outpatient clinics (individual, telephone clinics and multidisciplinary clinics), regular endoscopy lists, and weekly nutrition round on neonatal unit and paediatric wards. 

 Special interest in leading regional intestinal failure service is desirable. 

On the interview date, applicants must already be on the GMC specialist register with a certificate of completion of specialist training in Paediatric Gastroenterology (or equivalent training eg CSER) , or be within 6 months of completion.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in care of paediatric gastroenterology inpatients, and provide advice and input to other specialties. To provide telephone advice peripheral hospitals (service week model)
  • One multidisciplinary and one to two individual outpatient clinics per week at LRI.
  • Regular endoscopy lists
  • To participate in telephone clinics
  • On call commitment for paediatric gastroenterology (currently telephone only)
  • Involvement as needed in teaching and training (undergraduate and postgraduate)
  • If appropriately trained and experienced candidate, we are looking for someone with strong interest in leading intestinal failure and home PN service.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of the post

Clinical

  • Provide the highest standard of care and professionalism in the inpatient, acute and outpatient settings
  • Work collaboratively with the paediatric gastroenterology team and other services
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team, participate in MDT meetings and supervise trainees
  • Ensure effective communication between all stakeholders including patients, their parents or carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Work to appropriate national and local clinical guidelines and policies
  • Work with the team to develop and review protocols of care
  • Ensure that consistently high standards of service are delivered by example and mentorship
  • Work effectively with the Clinical Management Group clinical quality & safety coordinator to identify and reduce risk, incidents and complaints to ensure that the team learn from any such occurrences to improve patient safety
  • Initiate and participate in clinical audit as part of the clinical governance arrangements within the UHL Trust
  • Instigate and engage with Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) initiatives
  • Actively ensure the appropriate safeguarding of patients

Education and Training

Route to Recruit

  • Clinical supervision of trainee doctors
  • Clinical teaching of medical students
  • Undertaking trainees work-based assessment and providing clinical supervisor reports
  • Participation in undergraduate examinations
  • Develop and participate in outreach education to primary care and other stakeholders.

Research

It is the aim of the Leicester Children's Hospital to continue to develop the University Hospitals of Leicester as a recognised centre of excellence. This will require not only excellence in the clinical service but also an on-going programme of excellence in education and research.

Management and Administration

  • Undertake managerial duties associated with the care of their patients and the running and development of their Clinical Department
  • Have an understanding of the wider health agenda and modem NHS
  • Engage fully with the Children's Hospital Strategy and the strategic direction of the wider trust
  • Be able to account for their non-fixed session time - this may be filled with additional teaching, audit research and/or administrative duties
  • It is not envisaged that the post holder will have a designated budgetary responsibility, although the post holder will be expected to work with the Management Team and Lead Clinicians to ensure that the service is delivered within budget.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training in Paediatric Gastroenterology (or equivalent training eg CSER) or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date.
  • MRCPCH or Equivalent
  • Child Protection Level 3
  • APLS
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent.

Experience / Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of Paediatric Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
  • IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word etc.
  • Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest.
  • Fully trained in Paediatric Gastroenterology including diagnostic endoscopy
