Job overview

Exciting opportunities have arisen for CT and MRI Radiology Department Assistants to be primarily based at the Hinckley Community Diagnostic Centre , also formally known as Hinckley District Hospital;  although we do cross site work when required.

You will be rostered to CT and MRI and and will be  be expected to support with administration for the Imaging department including  booking in of patients for the examinations using the Radiology computer systems.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties include patient care and welfare, assisting and chaperoning patients prior to, during and after the examination. This  includes being able to give the patient a basic explanation of procedures and ensuring a safe discharge of the patient from the department. You will be responsible for cleaning and preparing the room prior to and post procedure and managing patient flow through the department. In addition helping to maintain imaging equipment and patient records; therefore, you must ensure accuracy of patient and examination details. You will also liaise with other departments to guarantee effective communication. You must also ensure that mandatory training is up to date and remain updated with any new developments and policies.

The shift patterns include long days, weekends and bank holidays on a rotational roster.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Job Responsibilites

  1. Principal Duties
  • Carry out duties as assigned; involving patient care and welfare; assisting the Radiology team where appropriate.
  • To assist patients prior to, during, and after the examination including being able to give the patient a basic explanation of procedures.
  • To be responsible in arranging and prioritising ad hoc workload, liaising both with departmental and ward staff to ensure that lists are covered, patient delays are kept to a minimum and rooms utilised at optimum levels.
  • Perform basic post procedure monitoring including ECG, Blood pressure measurement, and capillary blood glucose measurement, with adherence to relevant policies and procedures.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that the quality control testing of the blood sugar testing kit and suction machine is performed, with adherence to relevant policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the cleaning and preparation of the room prior to and post procedure.
  • Maintain clean and tidy work areas and waiting rooms participating in regular cleaning rotas for work areas in line with department and Trust policy. This may require contact with bodily fluids and on occasion’s unpleasant smells.
  • To demonstrate high levels of patient care and work closely with qualified staff maintaining a hands on approach to patient needs.
  •  To be responsible for stock levels by monitoring, ordering stock when required and checking areas for out of date stock. To check deliveries against orders to ensure an auditable system.
  • Adhere to infection control measures and be responsible for the cleaning of equipment post procedure in line with relevant protocols and policies. To help with ongoing staff training in this area.
  • To undertake the insertion of cannula in compliance with Imaging Service protocol, following training. Please note this is mandatory for this role.
  • To assist in the safe discharge of the patient from the department.
  • Ensure the maintenance of patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintain effective communication regarding issues relating to assigned duties, promptly reporting areas of concern.
  • Participate in rotation between CT and MRI as required.
  • Perform safety checks on protective clothing including lead aprons and gloves and maintenance of records in line with IRR 17 Regulations, where required.
  1. Responsibilities for Department Administration and Operation
  • Ensure accuracy of patient and examination details on the Radiology computer systems.
  • Answer telephone queries and deal with them appropriately and professionally.
  • To assist with post-processing and ensure that images have reached PACS.
  • To be responsible for facilitating the effective allocation of other RDAs to maintain staffing levels and to seek assistance when the service provision is compromised.
  • Assist in the training of new staff  between CT and MRI and undertake one to one training/mentoring with new starters.
  • To help with student training and work experience students as required.
  • Undertake any other duties consistent with their grade as required.

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 3 GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent
  • Apprenticeship level 2 or above or equivalent - NVQ/QCF etc
Desirable criteria
  • First aid Certificate
  • Care Certificate
  • Cannulation trained

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience in healthcare
  • Experience of working with computers
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of radiology within healthcare

Communication & Relationship Skills

  • Experience of team working
  • Experience of liaising with different groups of staff/people
Desirable criteria
  • Previous supervisory experience
