Job overview

The energy manager is responsible for the efficient management of energy, gas and water utilities and its transition towards Net Zero carbon across the three UHL Hospitals. Providing specialist knowledge and expertise on Utility Management Function/Services and the NHS sustainability agenda to other estates staff and UHL Senior Leadership Team They will be responsible for environmental performance in designated field and influencing others towards safe compliant practice and environmental excellence via strategies, projects, education and communication work streams. They will engage with staff of all disciplines and must have the ability to employ influential and persuasive skills, educating staff regarding energy inefficiencies and support the Trust sustainability agenda.

Main duties of the job

· Owning, and promoting the delivery of the UHL Trust Energy Policy,  meeting the NHS England’s ‘Net Zero’ and Utilities performance targets.

.Planning the requirements of the Trust’s energy demand and carbon footprint. 

· Report on energy use, carbon impact and cost. 

· Develop initiatives and innovations for reduction on energy consumption and demand. 

· Management of on-site energy generation contracts, supply chains, invoices and contract management

· Health & safety management for water and energy

·Building the UHL Energy Committee.

· Support on training  of staff on energy management.

· Manage  statutory requirements for the Trusts. 

· Develop communication systems for CMG and external partners. 

· To deputise for the Head of Sustainability at key governance meetings, both internal  / National Level

· Ensure that the Trust reduces its carbon emissions by 50% from correct, compliant segregation and delivery of a Net Zero health.   To respond to climate change targets for direct emissions by 2040  and indirect emissions by 2045 

 To integrate the infrastructure developments into the New Hospital Programme. 

· Build a strategy for requirements. 

· Support the verification plan, be part of the design team,  monitor and verify the NHP inn line with Net Zero Building standards.

· Occasional / Regular requirement to use computer software to develop or create reports, documents, drawings - CAD system for building areas

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Budget Manage the Trust Utility Budgets (Financial responsibilities Circa £20M usage budget). Responsible for the identification and delivery of CIP plans, in accordance with CMG/Corporate Areas target. Responsible for maintenance of physical assets for department / service and equipment relating to energy and water

Staff As Energy lead within the Sustainability team the post holder will be responsible for the development of the fu8nction within the UHL trust, providing understanding around legislative needs as well as sustainability and the trusts commitments to Energy strategy. This will include development of the team resources and the day to day management of these resources as required. Taking on the leadership of any said Subject Matter resource as its developed. This includes Career development, training & performance management. The post holder will also be expected the manage all utility requirements for the trust, including Water / Gas & electric suppliers and contracts. This will include review of utilities spend to ensuring contracted work meets required standards. It is anticipated that the post holder will be a key leadership resource within the head of sustainability team, and will deputise for Head of Sustainability periodically and also lead on the Trust green team and drive innovation through that team of clinical staff

Policy Responsible for the development and implementation of the Trust long term energy, water and gas strategy reflecting the CMG/Corporate Areas approach towards a Net Zero future. Ensure adherence to BREEAM and National Building Standards across all UHL Facilities.

Communications As the Head of Sustainability subject matter, and expert within the Energy field. The post holder will develop and implement effective communication with CMG/Corporate Areas and external partners such as UK ETS, CHP QA, ERIC etc.

Providing contract leadership for suppliers and contractors the role will include, scope producing, procurement process delivery, contract award and operational delivery. Developing audit and monitoring the post holder will need good communication and negotiation skills to deliver the energy support requirements effective. As policy owner for Energy Services the post holder will need to own the standard operating procedure associated to delivery of Energy Services as well as implement. Key communication structure provides awareness and compliance.

  • • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience from the Healthcare sector, plus specialist knowledge acquired via post graduate courses and experience preferably in energy management, or related subject. • Experience to masters equivalent level. • Evidence of continual professional development and a commitment to ongoing personal development. • Prior experience of managing Healthcare Energy and climate change compliance schemes. • CO2 footprint, Mandatory • Carbon reporting • Display Energy Certificates (DECs)
