Consultant Renal Transplant Surgeon

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

Job overview

As one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals, our vision is to move from where we are now to where we want to be.  Locally known as the journey from ‘Good to Great’

In undertaking this role you are expected at all times to behave in accordance with our Trust values which demonstrate your commitment to the delivery of high quality services to patients.  This will be in accordance with agreed objectives, targets, quality standards, controls and resource constraints.

The Transplant Unit provides transplantation and all the surgical support to the renal replacement programme in the East Midlands Network.  This includes significant volumes of vascular and peritoneal access work and other surgical procedures to support the end stage renal programme.  The unit participates in the national programme of organ sharing under the umbrella of UK Blood and Transplant.  The service currently has nine dedicated operating sessions for kidney transplantation, vascular and peritoneal access procedures and some of the general surgery.

Main duties of the job

The surgical staff are concerned primarily with renal transplantation and the provision of day to day ward care and management throughout the peri-operative period as well as general surgical cases admitted and operated under the team.

The surgical staff is also responsible for assessing patients’ suitability for transplantation and the follow-up of new and long term transplant recipients (6 months) in the Transplant Clinic.  Combined surgical/nephrology transplant ward rounds take place every day.

Renal transplant Out Patient Clinics are held three times per week and there are also clinics which patients are assessed for vascular and peri-operative access surgery and general surgery. These clinic sessions are also spread out within the renal and transplant network. In addition the appointee will be expected to provide clinic and theatre activity within the network and cover some aspects of general surgery.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, 'Leading in healthcare, trusted in communities' was developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners and is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
