Job overview

The Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) support children and young people within school and college settings who are presenting with mental health or emotional health problems which are of a low to moderate level of complexity and/or intensity.

You will be part of the multi-disciplinary MHST and be responsible for supporting the development of the teams and embedding its services within educational settings.  You will work as an autonomous and accountable practitioner within a wider multidisciplinary team.  This involves the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the care for the child or young person.

 

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for developing and disseminating packages of care, holding a caseload and undertaking the role of Senior Practitioner for children and young people with mild to moderate health problems in educational settings.  Support given may include a variety of evidenced based interventions and work with parents and teaching staff on both an individual basis and/or in a group setting.

You will work collaboratively with young people and their families incorporating the use of outcome measures within their work, and will offer specialist support, consultation and training to staff within the service and other agencies where appropriate.  You will provide assessment and therapeutic interventions and will support the Education Mental Health Practitioners in delivering the service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Low Intensity Supervisor training qualification, (or willingness to attend this at the earliest available opportunity)
  • CWP or EMHP Post Graduate Certificate
  • Substantial experience of providing supervision to low intensity practitioners
  • Registered with the BABCP or BPS as a CWP or EMHP (or applied for this)
Desirable criteria
  • • Low intensity senior practitioner Course completion or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competent and familiar with low intensity CBT interventions
  • Substantial experience of working in a CYP clinical setting delivering low intensity CBT
  • Evidence of CPD post training
  • Providing supervision experience or transferable skills
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of effective engagement with families and carers
  • Sound knowledge of National legislation and drivers, and other legislation related to the care of children and young people with emotional and mental health concerns
  • Awareness of national and local policies and how these impact on child and adolescent education
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of organising team duties
  • Experience of working in a community environment
  • Experience of working in an educational environment
  • Experience of managerial and clinical leadership
  • Experience of inducting staff members to the area with confidence

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent clinical decision problem solving skills.
  • To have good inter-personal skills with members of the public and users of the service, being sensitive to their needs and comments, i.e. complaints/suggestions/compliments.
  • Critical awareness of alternative evidence-based therapeutic modalities and treatment options for mild-moderate MH difficulties
  • Experience delivering psycho-educational groups in a community setting
  • Experience of engaging and delivering interventions to CYP with protected characteristics
  • Recognising when core interventions are appropriate for neurodiverse CYP and being able to make necessary adaptations
  • Recognising when alternative evidence-based low-intensity interventions are required for neurodiverse CYP and being able to deliver these
  • Recognising when CYPs needs or wider complexity factors (e.g. social/physical needs/risk/neurodiversity) mean they are beyond low intensity/early intervention remit and competence. Make suitable onwards referrals where indicated
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience of Whole School Approach to Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
  • Experience of working directly with senior leadership teams in service context (e.g. education, health, VCSE) to support design and delivery of programmes, policy, pathways, support offers etc
  • Has a clear working knowledge of the application of their respective professional code of conduct
  • Extensive knowledge of health and safety
  • Setting, monitoring and maintaining standards, ensuring high standards
  • Ability to formulate and implement new ideas
  • Ability to demonstrate sound value-based practice which empowers individuals and promotes wellness and is recovery focused
Desirable criteria
  • Sound knowledge of National Legislation and drivers and other legislation related to the care of children and young people educational provision and mental health
  • Knowledge Of NICE, CQC standards and regulations
  • Experience of and skills in mentoring/coaching other trainee CWPs/EMHPs
