Job overview

The department works across all 3 hospital sites and is busy with daily trauma lists and other activity consisting of elective inpatient and daycases lists, fracture and outpatient clinics, and emergency department streaming clinics for minor injuries.  It is equipped for the most modern orthopaedic procedures, being a well-equipped hospital with a full range of Clinical Support Services.

The well-developed department is supported by dedicated occupational therapists and the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department as a whole has excellent specialist nursing input.  Physiotherapy support in outpatient and inpatient areas is of a high standard, with well developed, dedicated teams.  The orthopaedic surgeons have excellent links with radiology services, where radiologists have a keen interest in musculoskeletal imaging, particularly ultrasound.  The Trust also has onsite access to CT and MRI.  The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department works very closely with the Rheumatology Department within the Trust and it is expected that any appointee will continue with this team approach.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School (HYMS).  This honorary appointment is in recognition of contribution to teaching and research and holders of honorary titles may request access to HYMS and University premises and facilities, systems, and library services.

Main duties of the job

As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.  

Integral to the responsibilities of the posts are the following requirements:

  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Business Unit’s services plans

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post would suit a good team player dedicated to high quality patient care. The opportunity exists to work in a non-hierarchical setting and offer a wide range of orthopaedic procedures in this busy Trust.  The postholder must be prepared to work cross site to allow development of services across northern Lincolnshire and Goole.

We are looking for an orthopaedic surgeon who has subspecialty interests in hand and wrist surgery.

The postholder will be required to create effective relationships with clinical colleagues as well as members of the management team.  Senior management are supportive of the service and related opportunities for development.

The Trust has rationalised the implant and prosthetic usage and the successful candidate will be expected to continue with this agreement.

The Consultant on call rota is 1 in 6 with internal cover between consultants for annual leave and study leave and is currently based at Grimsby Hospital. On call is nonresident and the person should be available over the phone and attend within 30 minutes if required. We are exploring the option of a single site on call and the frequency and site might change in the future when the trust’s reconfiguration strategy is agreed and implemented.

Currently one associate specialist on each site share the on call with consultants making it 1 in 7 in Scunthorpe and 1 in 6 in Grimsby.

Trauma and on call work is based at Grimsby and Scunthorpe. The majority of the elective work is undertaken at Goole and Grimsby. All complex paediatric trauma is undertaken by neighbouring Tertiary Centres, general paediatric trauma is delivered as part of our Trauma service. There is middle grade and consultant presence on all sites everyday to provide any advice for post-operative patients and the on call Consultant will assume responsibility of your patients should you not be available. The appointee is expected to work as part of the team to deliver the service.

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC Registration Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via o CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview o CESR or o European Community Rights Undertaken programme of training acceptable to the Royal College of Surgeons for appointment to Consultant Status Eligibility to work in the UK. Able to take responsibility for delivering the service without direct supervision
  • ATLS or equivalent – Provider Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job, [specialty knowledge exam]. Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need. Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job. Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job.
  • General Orthopaedic Training with sub specialist Hand and Wrist training and experience with general upper limb trauma experience

  • An appropriate higher – [specialty e.g. FRCS-T&O or equivalent] surgical qualification.
  • Fellowship in Hand and Wrist surgery Experience with general and UL Trauma
