Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with patients and those relatives, friends or carers involved in their care
Undertake clinical assessment of in-patients with acute mental health problems
Gain experience through observing the Consultant interviewing patients and those involved in their care, during ward reviews.
Work closely with ward staff, mainly nursing staff, in observing patients in the ward environment and comparing notes.
Through weekly clinical supervision with the Consultant, the trainee will learn about developing therapeutic relationships. ACE, Mini- ACE, and CbDs will be used to assess this.
Learn, through supervised clinical work, how to take comprehensive histories. This will include perusing past psychiatric case notes, the information therein incorporated in the history. The trainee will be expected to present these histories during ward reviews, allowing them to practice these skills on a regular basis. The supervision will extend to the weekly one to one supervision sessions where more delicate matters can be discussed. Assessment of risk will be a key aim as part of the history-taking and examination of mental state. This will cover any harm to self and any harm to others.
Examination of the patient will include not only the mental state but the patient’s physical state as well, including the carrying out of any relevant investigations such as blood tests or scans.
