Speciality Doctor
Job overview
Scunthorpe General Hospital provides a busy service giving wide experience in acute general paediatrics, surgery, ENT, dermatology, orthopaedic and dental children.
With very few exceptions all children under 16 years requiring hospitalisation are on the Children’s Unit. This consists of 18 in-patient beds used between surgery and medicine. There is a 4-bedded paediatric assessment and observation unit co-located on the children’s ward. A separate area on the Unit is used for adolescents and a further separate area for day cases and assessment. Two additional Paediatric High Dependency beds are situated on the ward. We have a consultant of the week system, with one consultant doing daily ward rounds on both Disney ward and the neonatal intensive care Unit.
There are approximately 2,200 acute medical paediatric admissions annually and 2,000 surgical admissions.
The Neonatal Unit is located close to the Central Delivery Suite. Delivery rate is approximately 2,100 per year, and the Neonatal Unit has two Intensive Care Cots, 2 high dependency cots, 6 special care cots and 4 transitional care cots. Babies below 26+6 weeks or those requiring cardiac intervention or neonatal surgery are currently transferred out in-utero. Our Neonatal Service is part of North Trent Neonatal Network, and our unit is designated as a local Neonatal Unit (LNU) or level 2 Unit. The Unit has state of the art monitoring and life support equipment.
