Job overview

The post-holder will be a post-graduate qualified family therapy practitioner; fully registered with the appropriate professional or regulatory body (e.g. HCPC, ACP, AFT), plus an additional post-graduate qualification in Psychotherapeutic Therapies (e.g. CYP IAPT/ post graduate diploma in systemic family practice/cognitive behavioural therapy). 

The post-holder will provide specialist treatment and assessment within their professional sphere of expertise. They will be responsible for assessment, treatment, and systematic outcome measurement of CAMHS service users and the clinical supervision of junior clinicians within the team, where required. 

 

They will ensure that a high quality, timely, accessible, and evidence-based service is available to all service users who require this input, throughout the borough.  

The post-holder will establish and maintain excellent working relationships with wider mental health and wellbeing services and ensure adherence to evidence-based treatments by all clinical staff across the team. 

The appointee will be actively engaged in providing and overseeing various therapeutic interventions, including systemic family work, parental guidance, group sessions, school-based observations of children, brief consultations, and expert psychotherapeutic treatments. They will oversee all specialized psychotherapeutic evaluations and family therapy interventions within their area of professional expertise.

Main duties of the job

  • The role involves delivering a qualified specialist child and adolescent psychotherapy service to children and young people with mental health issues within a multi-disciplinary CAMHS team across all care sectors.
  • This includes conducting specialist psychotherapeutic assessments and therapy for service users and their families/carers, as well as offering advice and consultation on patient care to non-psychotherapist colleagues and the support network.
  • The incumbent will operate independently, adhering to professional guidelines and the service's policy framework. They will employ research skills for auditing, policy support, and service development, and conduct research relevant to the young people, their families, and carers in the service area.
  • The role also entails providing general CAMHS assessments and interventions, specialist psychotherapeutic interventions, and contributing to specialist care plans for looked-after children and young people.
  • Additionally, the role includes performing highly specialized assessments for children with complex mental health conditions.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,313 to a maximum of £5,436 p.a. pro rata for part time).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust.  All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.  As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.  The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide specialist psychotherapeutic assessments of children and young people referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources.
  • Formulate and implement plans for the formal treatment and/or management of the child/young persons problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings
  • Be responsible for implementing a range of psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, grounded in the principles and techniques of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. These will include long and short term interventions as appropriate to need
  • Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
  • To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of children and young people whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.
  • Contribute directly and indirectly to a framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all children and young people of the service, across all settings and agencies serving children and young people with learning disabilities and mental health problems/challenging behaviour.
  • To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual children and young people.
  • Act as case worker, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of CAMHS care plans including children and young people, their carers, referring agents and others involved in the network of care.
  • Communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of children and young people under their care and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology or statement of equivalence
  • To be registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist (when applicant is a final year trainee, registration needs to be obtained before commencing the post.
  • Eligible for Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society.
  • Successful completion of a post-graduate training in child and adolescent family therapy and To be eligible for registration as a full member of the appropriate professional body (e.g. HCPC, BABCP, ACP, AFT, NMC)
Desirable criteria
  • Further post-Qualification training in CBT or third wave approaches (e.g. ACT, CFT, DBT)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of clinical assessment and specialist intervention with individuals. Working with difficult, disturbed or challenging children/young people requiring skilled and complex interventions. Good understanding and experience of using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (preferably with children).
  • Experience of working therapeutically with parents/carers/families of children and young people with complex mental health problems Experience of using observation (e.g. In school contexts) to contribute to assessments of children. Experience of carrying out generic assessment with other colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team Experience of specialist assessment carried out autonomously to determine the most appropriate treatment plan from a range of options for the child/young person.
  • Experience of providing clinical interventions in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience in paediatric health settings. Accredited with the BABCP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists).
