Job overview

The post offered is that of Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry, working between the Barnet Triage Team and Wellbeing Clinic. The Triage Team role involves supporting the team with screening GP referrals where medical input is required, providing advice to primary care colleagues, and reviewing primary care patients unlikely to need the support of a community mental health team (CMHT).  The Wellbeing Clinic role involves reviewing standalone patients (not receiving input from a CMHT) attending for depot medication or clozapine monitoring.  This post was initially commissioned as pilot for twelve months as part of the Community Transformation Programme within Barnet, and is currently occupied by a fixed term locum.  The post is full-time for ten Programmed Activities (PA): 7.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). 

Main duties of the job

o    Provide leadership and supervision for a multidisciplinary Primary Care Triage Team, and the Wellbeing Clinic team in Barnet.
o    Provide supervision to Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP). Where appropriate this can be delegated to trainees/nurse prescribers under the supervision of the Consultant.
o    Ensure the review and care of the standalone Wellbeing Clinic patients.
o    Ensure the timely assessment, treatment, and reviews of people with mental health needs with appropriate referrals into specialized secondary care support as required.
o    Promote mental health and independence for all people
o    Provide clinical and professional leadership in the service.
o    Provide support to carers and relatives of people, including them wherever possible and in care plans.
o    Facilitate access to a range of community orientated services to those who may need them.
o    Liaise effectively with other Trust services and external partner agencies in the best interests of patients.
o    Provide a service of the highest quality, within the limits of our resources.
o    Promote high quality management of mental health patients by non-medical staff.
o    Support non-medical colleagues in working independently.
o    Take part in management activities related to the post, or the wider service within which it is embedded.
o    Comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. MHA (1983) and MCA (2005).

In order to meet the needs of the Trust you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. The team consultant role (this post) involves supporting the team with screening GP referrals where medical input is required, providing phone/email advice to primary care colleagues, and reviewing primary care patients unlikely to need the support of a CMHT.  There is also a supervisory role to Advanced Clinical Practitioners (see below) based in GP surgeries. Person specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Within six months of obtaining a CCT in general adult psychiatry (or dual trained) or on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
  • Excellent clinical skills with experience of inpatient psychiatric care
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Section 12 Approved and an Approved Clinician
  • Registered for the Continuing Professional Development Programme in the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Membership of a Medical Defence Union
  • Clinical supervision skills training
Desirable criteria
  • Additional degree or equivalent
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification
  • Research experience
