Job overview
An Exciting opportunity has arisen to join and help develop the General Surgery service at Barnet Hospital. We are looking for an applicant who has experience in Emergency and Elective General Surgery to support the provision and development of service. The successful applicant will work within the multidisciplinary establishment with outpatient General Surgery clinics, an endoscopy lists at the Chase Farm Hospital and elective theatre lists at Chase Farm and Barnet. This post offers 10 PAs of combined direct clinical and supporting programmed activity.
The applicants will be encouraged to contribute to the audit, research as well as under- and post-graduate teaching within the department.
Main duties of the job
Main clinical duties and responsibilities of the post
- Work as an emergency general surgeon and to be involved in a sub-specialist area of surgery that will complement the interests of the department.
- Provide hands on clinical leadership to the emergency general surgery pathway operating in accordance with the operational policy.
- Contribute to teaching, including undergraduate teaching, and the teaching and professional development of junior medical staff.
- Share in the general administrative and management responsibilities of the departments and participate in the R & D programmes of the department.
- Work with the existing consultants and colleagues in management
- Participate in the supervision and training of specialty trainees and clinical scientists, teaching of other junior trainees, medical students and hospital staff as appropriate.
- Participate in clinical audit and quality improvement Participate in service development and policy review.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking to recruit a 6 month locum consultant emergency and general surgeon to join our team at the Barnet Hospital. The individual should have specialist skills in open and laparoscopic surgery in both the elective and emergency setting. The role will principally involve emergency and general surgery and have access to clinics and elective theatre lists. The on-call commitment for general surgical is 1 in 12 weekends and 1 in 3 weekdays. The provision of General Emergency Surgery at the trust is designed to deliver the London standards for acute emergency care. A successful candidate would be expected to maintain these standards and continue the drive for excellence in this area. This includes delivering ambulatory emergency care and excellence in NELA outcomes. The elective weeks consist of an all-day operating list once a week. This day surgical activity will be undertaken at Chase Farm Hospital. Outpatient clinics will be based at the Chase Farm or Barnet site and endoscopy will be undertaken at Chase Farm Hospital. - Training in laparoscopic surgery

- JAG accreditation in endoscopy
