Locum Consultant in General Paediatrics

Based at Barnet Hospital (with other site working i.e. Chase Farm and Edgware)

Main duties of the job

We are seeking to appoint a locum consultant in General Paediatrics, for a period of one year in the first instance. Special interest in Child Safeguarding is desirable as the post-holder will contribute to CMPE supervision and other Safeguarding work.

Working for our organisation

The proposed job plan is annualised based on a 42 week working year. The working pattern will include duties covering paediatric ward for attending weeks, Ward & ED when on call, outpatient clinics & out of hours cover. Each activity has a tariff in terms of PAs e.g., an outpatient clinic provides 1.25 PAs.

 This post will participate in 1:12 weekday and weekend on call rota. The department is working towards achieving the 14hr standard and Consultants will be expected to cover paediatric assessment unit and A&E and be resident onsite till 9 PM during weekday on calls and 6pm for weekends.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Paediatric Department consists of a Children’s Ward (24 beds), Pluto day unit (6 beds) and Paediatric outpatient clinic. The department also provides Level 1 POSCU services at this site. The Level 2 Neonatal Unit has 30 cots, 4 of which are equipped for intensive care, 6 High Dependency and a 4-bed transitional care ward.

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for Paediatrics; or
  • Registered with the GMC and within 6 months of being accepted for the specialist register for paediatrics at the time of interview.
  • Membership/Fellowship of Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health / equivalent
  • APLS/NLS provider
  • Level 3 Child Protection training
Desirable criteria
  • APLS/NLS Instructor
  • Experience in Child Protection Medical and Child Safeguarding at Consultant Level
