Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced medicines management pharmacy technician to lead and coordinate the delivery of a responsive, proactive, patient-focused clinical pharmacy technician service to the wards. This will include the promotion of safe, effective, and cost-effective drug use to facilitate patient admission and enhance continuity of care across the primary/ secondary interface. This includes being responsible for leading the team of MMTs, rotational

pharmacy technicians, satellite-based pharmacy support workers and pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician trainees (PTPTs), ensuring that their induction, training, assessment, and appraisal is being managed.

The postholder will be responsible for leading and maintaining a pharmacy technician medicines management service at ward level. This will include a high standard of medicines reconciliation, the assessment of patients own drugs, providing original pack dispensing, counselling patients about their medicines and co-ordinating supply of both in-patient and discharge medicines.

The postholder will promote high quality drug use, effective risk management, patient safety - clinical governance initiatives and adherence to trust policies, guidelines and advises on drug budget management in these areas and carry out pharmacy practice research and clinical audit in this area of practice. They will support the senior pharmacy and nursing teams in ensuring that Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards are maintained and that they promote continuous improvement schemes to address identified actions when needed.

 

The postholder will have responsibility for the day-to-day running of the medical satellite pharmacy including allocation of work and ordering and supply of medicines. They will also be responsible for ensuring that junior staff are trained and competent do undertake their roles within this area.

Potential candidates should be an accredited checking technician with experience of working at ward level and managing a team. They will be confident with the use of pharmacy systems including the ordering of medicines and have a strong commitment to training staff

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Educational Supervisor Training course or Assessor A1 qualification or equivalent
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician
  • AIMM, MOP or equivalent relevant experience in the medicines management role
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation degree and/or Management qualification and/or clinical diploma or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Considerable post qualification experience in Medicines Management at ward level in a hospital setting
  • Previous assessable supervisory experience and experience in training
  • Experience of conducting appraisals with feedback
  • Experience of recruitment and selection of other technical staff
  • Computer literate including Microsoft software products including JAC
  • Experience of working closely with other healthcare professionals (HCP’s) such as nursing staff, operational managers
Desirable criteria
  • Considerable post qualification work in an operational management capacity
  • Previous assessable experience of project management
  • Experience of performance management
  • Experience of participating in high level / MDT meetings
  • Experience of implementing a clinical governance agenda at ward level.
