Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic part time consultant psychiatrist to work within the Barnet CEN Pathway. As part of the nationwide transformation of community mental health services, our team has joined Barnet Adult Psychology as a specific treatment pathway with the view to widen treatment offers for patients with complex emotional needs as well as to create a closer working relationship with psychological treatment services. The post holder will be required to provide clinical and professional leadership, having an integral role in the performance of the team, further development of the service, and the development of clinical pathways and priorities.

Main duties of the job

A more detailed job description is attached.  There is support for newly appointed consultants in the StartWell group.  As part of this the post holder will have the opportunity of having a more senior consultant as a mentor.

The role of the consultant is to be the clinical lead of the team and to ensure high quality, patient-centred, effective, safe and efficient care is delivered by the team.

·       To take a lead role in assessing new patients, requesting and interpreting investigations, diagnosis and discussion with patients and their carers.

·       To take a leading role in developing the service, supervising junior colleagues and providing medical input to a multi-disciplinary team.

·       To provide clinical and professional leadership in the service.

·       To promote the management of psychiatric patients by non-medical staff.

·       To support non-medical colleagues in working independently.

·       To maintain excellent records on BEH system.

·       To ensure that junior doctors working with them are compliant with the Working Time Directive and supported informally and formally.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Pl

·       To provide clinical and professional leadership in the service.

·       To promote the management of psychiatric patients by non-medical staff.

·       To support non-medical colleagues in working independently.

·       To maintain excellent records on BEH system.

·       To ensure that junior doctors working with them are compliant with the Working Time Directive and supported informally and formally.

·       To comply with all legal obligations covering clinical practice e.g. Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, safeguarding procedures

·       To teach and supervise medical staff and other professionals in all aspects of psychiatric care.

·       To participate in the trust-wide day-time consultant psychiatrist second on-call Rota for Health Based Place of Safety situated at Chase Farm Hospital and the trustwide on call rota

·       To provide clinical and professional leadership within the post and take part in management activities and governance processes related to the post or the wider service within which it is embedded.

·       As a senior clinician, to have an integral role in the performance of the team, further development of the service, and the development of the clinical pathways and priorities of the service.

·       The team consultants will usually be expected to provide direct assessment of more complex and higher risk cases. The post-holder will also work closely with the team manager to ensure that all referral demands are met as far as possible within the commissioned timescales.

We have been working together in a Partnership between Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for some time, with a single Chair and Chief Executive since 2021 and single Executive Team since 2022. We launched our North London Mental Health Partnership Strategy in May 2023 and in July 2023 our Boards agreed that coming together to create one new Trust is best for our service users, our staff and our local communities. Subject to final approvals, we will be formally established as one new Trust on 1 October 2024.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC and a license to practice from the intended start date Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • MB BS or equivalent qualification
  • Section 12 (2) and Approved Clinician or able to achieve within three months of appointment
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Ability to work in and lead a multi-disciplinary team
  • Demonstrates commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement
  • Able to use and appraise clinical evidence
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit/quality improvement programmes.
