Job overview

To develop and participate in ward based pharmacy services in conjunction with clinical and patient services staff. The post holder will support the delivery of a high-quality pharmacy service, under the direction of the line manager who will assess the ward based competencies of the post holder and ensure standardisation of activities.
The post holder will be managed by the Lead Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician and provide a pharmacy technical link between the wards and pharmacy team, taking the lead in assessing and maintaining patient’s own drugs and one-stop dispensing systems, supporting with discharge planning and patient counselling. They will be expected to pass in-house competency assessments.

Main duties of the job

        To maintain compliance with King’s policies and procedures for Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians. Compliance will be monitored and assessed by the line manager. 

·         To maintain and develop high quality, consistent, patient-focused pharmacy services to wards in conjunction with clinical and patient services staff. 

       To be the technical link person between wards and pharmacy, and to manage calls and requests as appropriate for the pharmacy team, via the Wifi phones.

·       To manage and support the safe, accurate and timely supply of medicines to wards and clinics, and other areas as required, by managing the medication supply chain in conjunction with Pharmacy team members, Stores and Distribution staff. 

·         To adhere to and maintain quality standards and performance indicators for service developments implemented.

·         To cover or to participate in dispensary services, as necessary. To cover other specialties, as and when necessary, as required by the Clinical Services team, to the same standard, in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures. 

·         To support the Pharmacy Clinical Services team in the development of the medicines management pharmacy technician service.

·        Be able to accuracy check clinically screened dispensed prescriptions, according to policy.

·        To be able to follow departmental SOPs and dispense medication accurately.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To deputise for the Deputy Dispensary Manager during periods of absence, taking responsibility for the smooth running of the dispensary and resolving problems as they arise.
  • To organise the dispensary-based services including inpatients, outpatients, TTAs, controlled drugs and Clinical Trials to agreed performance targets with guidance and support from the Dispensary Manager.
  • To assist with the writing, implementation and updating of policies and procedures specific to the dispensary service.
  • To review dispensary errors ensuring actions are taken to address poor performance and reporting progress to the Dispensary Manager.
  • To attend cross site meetings with the aim to standardise practice across sites.

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 plus accredited underpinning knowledge [BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent] or equivalent.

Relevant experience

  • Significant experience post registration relevant to hospital pharmacy practice with assessed competencies

Registration

  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Qualifications

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
