A position has become available for a band 7 clinical physiologist to join the neurophysiology  department based at the National Society for Epilepsy, Sir William Gowers Ward, in Buckinghamshire.

This unit is part of University College Hospital, coming under the umbrella of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

The EEG service at Chalfont undertake highly complex specialist diagnostic tests for, mainly adults, in an outpatient and inpatient setting. The work we do here may also be used as part of a patient’s work up for epilepsy surgery.  

The physiologist will be expected to perform complex video-EEG telemetry, home video-telemetry, ambulatory EEG, prolonged EEG with video & routine EEGs. There is also an opportunity to do some limited PSG work. There are 6 video-EEG telemetry bed, based in dedicated rooms, on a 26 bed ward.

There is ample opportunity to take part in research projects happening on site, and to attend relevant conferences and study days.

Current working hours are 8:30 – 4:30 Monday – Friday, these may change over time.

Your main responsibilities will be to:
•    Provide a highly complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service. 
•    Undertake interpretation of results and provision of written factual reports, communicating directly with senior staff, or consultants directly, as appropriate, regarding any unusual or unexpected findings. 
•    Present the findings of the video telemetry studies at the weekly multidisciplinary meeting, and contribute to ward rounds and teaching sessions held on the unit on a regular basis. 
•    Provide assistance with and actively participate in research projects carried out on the telemetry unit. 
•    Education and training of techniques to new members of staff and demonstration of the department and ward activity to professional visitors. 
•    Participate in quality assurance and audit within the department and on a regional basis. 
•    Ensure compliance with all UCLH policies

The team at Epilepsy Society provides an outpatient and inpatient service. There are 6 dedicated inpatient beds for video-EEG telemetry studies, monitoring patients with a variety of neurological, neurosurgical and neuropsychiatric conditions, performing around 300 video-EEG telemetry studies per year. In addition we do outpatient studies, including around 200 ambulatory EEG, 40 home VTs, and 150 routine / prolonged/ sleep deprived EEGs.

Our Neurophysiology team consists of 7 highly motivated Clinical Physiologists, Based on the Sir William Gowers ward.  Medical cover is provided by SHOs, with consultants doing an MDT on a Tuesday, and ward rounds on Friday. 

This vacancy would strongly suit an individual with some years of experience in Clinical Neurophysiology who aligns with these objectives and values.

There are 6 beds on the Sir William Gowers Unit,  The unit operates over a 5day period, and clinical physiologists currently work by covering the hours of 08:30 – 4:30, Monday – Friday (although this could change in the future) .

NHS patients are seen on the Telemetry Unit with patients being referred from all over the country and occasionally overseas. The majority of patients are referred from consultants based either full or part-time at NHNN, however we accept referrals from consultants across the UK for this specialist service.
