Job overview
This is a position due to increased demand for general trauma and shoulder &elbow surgery. The candidate will be expected to integrate within the team of existing consultants to provide a complete elective and emergency orthopaedic service. He/she will be expected to have an interest in general trauma including upper and lower limb trauma service, all aspect of shoulder and elbow surgery especially complex upper shoulder trauma, shoulder and elbow arthroscopy and arthroplasty surgery including revision arthroplasty service. To support and further develop the management of patients accessing the service, the post holder will be expected to work with a team of trauma surgeon as part of 7 days trauma service. This requires knowledge, experience and expertise in undertaking general and complex trauma surgeries.
Main duties of the job
It would be expected that the appointee will undertake a minimum of 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting duties. Normally these are expected to be carried out on site, though this may be negotiable in respect of the supporting activities. The job plan is annualised and run over an twelve-week timetable. The department workload and planning often requires a degree of personal flexibility. The final timetable will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Lead and Service Manager following appointment. Any further changes to the job plan must be for the betterment of the service and have the full support of the specialty division together with the Medical Director's agreement.

Purley War Memorial Hospital (PWMH) in the south of the borough offers outpatient care, including diagnostic services, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services run by Moorfields Eye Hospital, alongside an onsite GP surgery.
Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after for people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of general Orthopaedic patients admitted under his/her care and on call on a 1 in 12 rota based at the Croydon site.
The orthopaedic on call rota will run as Consultant of the Week (emergency committed only) from Friday 8am until Friday 8am the following week in line with the London Emergency Standards 1 in 12
There is 1 in 12 weekend commitment. The post holder will share the junior staff and will be responsible for training of CT1 and STs as well as GPVTS and Trust Grade Doctors. Consultants are required to be onsite and free of other commitments when on call during normal working hours. The successful applicant will provide a twice daily ward round when on call and will be free of clinical commitments as part of the 24 hours emergency surgery guidelines. The post holder participates in the local and the regional complex trauma and upper limb MDT which is run fortnightly and this will be incorporated in to the job plan.
The postholder will undertake one hand clinic, one shoulder clinic and one fracture clinic at Croydon University Hospital weekly and a whole day operating at either the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre or the Croydon Elective Centre on a weekly basis.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT. (CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
- An appropriate higher surgical qualification
- Fellowship trained in Trauma and shoulder and elbow surgery. surgery
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in trauma unit
- Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
- Consultant level experience in shoulder and elbow surgery
Relevant clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in complex upper limb trauma including shoulder anatomic and reverse polarity arthroplasty and elbow reconstruction and replacement
- Expertise and competency in general trauma including upper and lower limb trauma surgery.
- Experience in emergency surgery and management of multi-injured patient
- Competence in indicative procedures
Management experience
