Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Critical care Unit ( CCU) at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust to support the safe medicines management within the department.
The Royal Marsden Hospital is a specialist cancer hospital and together with its principal academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research they are ranked in the top five cancer centres in the world for the impact of their research. It is a centre of excellence with an international reputation for ground-breaking research and pioneering the very latest in cancer treatments and technologies, as well as specialising in cancer diagnosis and education.
The medicines management assistant will work in a supporting role to both CCU and Pharmacy, ensuring safe and secure medication and fluids storage including managing the automated medicines cabinet within the Critical Care Unit (CCU), and High Dependency Unit (HDU) whilst ensuring that ward stock is available in a timely manner.
The post holder will also have the opportunity to participate in various pharmacy clinical service duties, whilst under the supervision of the Lead CCU Pharmacist and Lead Pharmacy Technician .
Main duties of the job
The principal role of this post holder is to assist in the technical aspects surrounding the safe and secure storage of medication and fluids within the Critical Care Unit (CCU), and High Dependency Unit (HDU) at The Royal Marsden Hospital (NHS Foundation Trust).
The post holder will be responsible for various technical duties with regards to medication storage, including managing the automated drug cupboards on CCU and HDU. The post holder will also have the opportunity to participate in various pharmacy clinical service duties, whilst under the supervision of the Lead CCU Pharmacy Technician.

2.1.1 To gain experience and understanding of the procedures for stock ordering, rotation, distribution and stock control
2.1.2 To ensure own actions reduce risks to health and safety and to promote a health and safety culture within the workplace

Education/Qualifications/Experience
Essential criteria
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills (English and Maths GCSEs or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Some previous experience working in a healthcare setting.
- NVQ in Health and Social Care Level 2 (or ability to study to attain Level 2 while in post)
Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good organisational/time management
- Contribute and work effectively in a team
- Good communication skills (written and verbal)
- Ability to train other members of staff
- Evidence of commitment to customer care initiatives and ability to use own initiative
- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications eg. Word and Excel.

- Awareness of the importance of patient confidentiality
- Awareness of health and safety at work e.g. Manual Handling skills, infection control measures

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
