Job overview

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centre and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT with dual energy, MRI 1.5T and 3T, Mammography including large field and interventional procedures, Ultrasound, general X-Ray, IR and fluoroscopy. The IR department conducts specific oncological interventional procedures such as Embolisation and ablations using a variety of ablative equipment
Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents; all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology. 
We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic trained radiographers for a band 7 IR/CT radiographer post on the Chelsea site.  Applicants will preferably have significant post graduate experience in CT and Interventional Radiology.  Post graduate academic qualifications are desirable. The successful candidate should be an innovative and proficient in the use of specialist equipment.  Also, a radiographer who is highly motivated with good communication skills, and keen to contribute positively to the IR, X-ray and CT service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach as the department will operate between 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 8am – 5pm

The post holder will work as part of the X-ray/IR and CT team liaising with Radiologists and Clinicians in charge of a patient. The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with clinical nurse specialists, advanced nurse practitioners, ward staff and other departmental staff.  They will also liaise with internal and external agencies.

It is essential that the post holder will have significant post graduate experience in IR and CT. This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills.   The key working relationships will be with other radiographers, CT and X-Ray/IR superintendents on both Chelsea & Sutton sites, radiology clerical and admin staff, clinical scientists, consultant radiologists and clinical referrers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be required to rotate between CT and IR and will have responsibility for the timely, efficient and courteous provision of imaging services within the available resources.
The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach.   
•    The CT department operates between 8.00am and 8.00pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9am -5pm.  
•    The IR department operates between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday.  

Participation in the non-residential on-call provision is required.  
This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills. It is essential that the post holder has significant post graduate experience in IR, CT and X-Ray.

•    Deputise for the X-ray/ IR and CT Superintendents when required. 
•    Ensure the timely, efficient and courteous provision of IR, X-Ray and CT services, on multiple pieces of equipment within the available resources.
•    Support the Superintendents in the operational management of the Imaging department. 
•    Work closely with the IR Consultant radiologists to provide timely and reactive service 
•    Work with Trust physicists to ensure all equipment is maintained to a high standard and meets QA and H&S requirement. 
•    Promote awareness and compliance with policy and or guidelines for requests of IR, X-Ray and CT.
•    Ensure that the department implements an agreed programme for quality assurance and ultimately an external QA accreditation standard as applicable. 
•    Be proficient in the use of all IR, X-Ray and CT equipment and in all specialist techniques.
•    Monitor and report equipment faults and to determine the severity of a problem and its probable impact on the workload. 
•    To make a balanced judgment on when to call in a service engineer, taking into account the effect on the normal running of the service. 
•    Liaise with equipment suppliers regarding attendance of an engineer at a suitable time in the event of minor faults or immediately in the event of total equipment failure. 
•    Re-arrange the work list in the event of equipment failure, being responsive to the inconvenience caused to patients by short notice cancellation of appointments.
