Job overview

The Estates Department operate and maintain, energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, air conditioning to wards, outpatients and operating theatres.  Estates directly impacts on patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Estates Trust.   
We have an exciting opportunity for a committed, highly self-motivated individual. The Royal Marsden is looking for an Estates Officer to join the Estates Team in Chelsea.  This is a highly valuable broad ranging role, which will expose them to the whole range of Estates services including mechanical, electrical, building & energy control systems and project management.  The candidate must be highly proactive in developing their technical knowledge in all aspects of training and work undertaken, engage in active discussions about skills, techniques, methods and approach to tasks in order to develop as a skilled professional. Behaviour at all times must be conducted in a professional manner and consistent with Trust Values.                                                                                                                      

Main duties of the job

1.1.    Be dynamic in their approach and flexible and adaptable to changing needs and priorities
1.2.    Work proactively and support both management and frontline Estates staff in delivering an effective service
1.3.    To ensure that The RMH Healthcare Policies and procedures are adhered to.
1.4.    The post holder will be required to always comply with the requirements of the Health & Safety regulations and the Works and Trust’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures
1.5.    To always ensure confidentiality on all matters and information obtained during the course of employment.

The Estates Department is responsible for providing the safe operation of planned, reactive and emergency maintenance to The RMH Trust. The Estates Officer having a range of duties will support the department, and the wider Trust in providing a comfortable, safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.

 

The Trust incorporates many building types and engineering systems, all of which must comply with current legislation, guidance and recommended approved codes of practices, therefore it is crucial for the post holder to have or gain knowledge of the plant and systems, including:

Patient needs and medical advances frequently bring redevelopment or updating of departments. Whether this work is a maintenance project, in-house or a delegated Capital Scheme, the need to support and liaise with Architects, Consultants, Contractors and staff is frequent.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A good standard of education
  • Specialist knowledge acquired through relevant HNC/HND/Degree course or equivalent working experience and responsibilities and underpinned by: Relevant C&G trade apprenticeship Post apprentice experience. One or more Hospital Engineering related qualification, i.e., Ventilation/water/lift maintenance/ medical gases/ sterilizers
Desirable criteria
  • Service training
  • Additional Hospital Engineering related qualification
  • Recognised supervisory management qualification
  • Recognised Health & Safety Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A number of years within a maintenance environment.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools and machinery
  • Highly aware of Health & Safety issues
  • Experienced in working in a demand driven service
  • Experienced in working to deadlines
  • Experienced in issuing permits to work
Desirable criteria
  • Supervision of multi- disciplinary team in healthcare premises
  • Experience of working in a large organisation
