Consultant Medical Oncologist - Gastrointestinal Cancer

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Job overview

This is a new position for a Consultant in Medical Oncology with an interest in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, working primarily at The Royal Marsden but in close collaboration with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).  The post is part funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) RM/ICR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

The Royal Marsden, together with its academic partner The ICR, is designated as the UK's only NIHR BRC dedicated solely to cancer.

The GI Unit, which spans the Chelsea and Sutton sites, is world renowned for clinical care and clinical research related to patients with gastrointestinal cancers. All tumours of the gastrointestinal tract are treated including oesophago-gastric, colorectal, hepato-biliary and neuroendocrine cancers.  Clinical and translational research is fully integrated within the unit alongside standard of care treatment pathways. Training the next generation of clinicians (both junior doctors and clinical research fellows) is also an integral part of the Unit’s remit.

Main duties of the job

The GI Unit has a large integrated clinical research team of over 40 people comprising clinical research fellows (many of whom are supported to undertake higher degrees), research nurses, project managers, clinical trial co-ordinators, clinical trial administrators and biological specimen coordinators. It has one of the largest academic and commercial clinical trial portfolios in the Trust and leads national multicentre trials through the Royal Marsden Clinical Trials Unit.  National and international collaboration is integral to the Unit’s research strategy.

The post-holder will work as part of the GI Cancers Liquid Biopsy team in the GI Unit, recently established and supported by the NIHR and the GI unit, with one area of focus being in genomics and blood based biomarkers.  The post holder will work with the relevant BRC Themes including but not limited to Precision Diagnostics and cancer Evolution (PDCE), Precision Therapeutics, Immunotherapeutics, Early Drug Development, Cancer Treatment Effects and Imaging and Data Science as applied to GI cancers.

Working for our organisation

The Royal Marsden is a world leader in cancer research, treatment and education. Together with our academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), we are the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and the only National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre specialising in cancer in the UK.

Our mission is to continue to make a national and international contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured and quality of life is improved for those with cancer. The Royal Marsden therefore plays an important role in championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge treatment.

The Trust’s annual budget is £360 million and we employ over 3,500 staff, including 335 medical staff, across two sites located in Chelsea and Sutton (Surrey). Over 50,000 patients attend The Royal Marsden each year. We provide community services across the Borough of Sutton. We have a Chemotherapy Medical Daycare Unit at Kingston Hospital.

We have a reputation for delivering high quality performance. We were ranked joint first in the CQC national inpatient survey results, above average in national cancer patient experience survey and ranked first amongst teaching hospitals in the UK for our staff survey results.
