Job overview

This is a 1 year fixed term post, with a start date of June 2025, with the Head, Neck and Thyroid Unit designed to provide training in the management of recurrent cancers, Robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and complex free flap reconstructions for the management of head and neck cancers. The fellow will have access to the Robotic surgery simulator, to further complement their educational experience. The fellow will become very familiar with the DaVinci robot operating room setup, docking techniques, instruments, and troubleshooting approaches.

The fellow will actively participate in the perioperative management of all patients in the head and neck unit, and collaborate with other members in the perioperative management of Robotic surgical patients. In addition to the technical aspects, the successful candidates will manage all aspects of complicated patients and partake in the MDT.

Fellows will have protected time for research, and have abundant research opportunities and mentorship. The fellow should expect to publish 2-3 publications by the end of the year, with emphasis on surgery for recurrent head and neck cancer. The fellow will have the opportunity to attend and present his/her research at national and international meetings.

There is also an expectation that the post holder participate in discussions with the Consultant group about performance, clinical system improvements, patient safety, education and training as well as day to day management issues.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the provision of Surgical Services including:-

  • The post holder will support new and follow-up clinics.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to undertake parallel and independent theatre lists.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to participate and be trained in all major head and neck oncological procedures appropriate to their level of training.
  • The fellow will be expected to be involved in the training of higher surgical trainees, both in the outpatient setting and in theatre for procedures such as neck dissection, thyroidectomy and laryngectomy/laryngopharyngectomy.
  • The incumbent is expected to play a contributory role in current departmental research, audit, and teaching as well as lead research projects under the supervision of Consultants. Specifically, the post holder will be required to take part in research activities related to recurrent head and neck cancer management.
  • There will be on call expectation on this post.

The fellow will be allowed to develop his or her area of interest.

The postholder is expected to support and be involved with training the junior staff.

  • Attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings
  • So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties the postholder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.
  • The postholder undertakes exceptionally to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The postholder undertakes exceptionally to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • The post holder will be expected to provide prospective and cross cover for other members of the Team.

The post holder will be expected to advise administrative, nursing and junior medical staff on list allocation, and vetting patients for outpatient clinics.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for full Registration with the GMC FRCS or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 4 years surgical training with a period of at least two years within head and neck surgery, with the ability to independently perform primary ablative surgery for head and neck cancers, local and regional flaps and have experience as first assistance in microvascular surgery.
  • Experience in the management of acute medical emergencies and, practical interventions e.g. chest drains, central lines etc.
  • Experience in general oncology management including treatment of oncological emergencies and chemotherapy.
  • Experience of working with other systemic cancer therapies
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and manage junior doctors
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems; able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely

  • All applicants able to demonstrate skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Good communications skills, ability to work as part as a team, take initiative and make decisions.
