Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, self-motivated nurse to lead our gynaecology inpatient ward at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust.

We are looking for a Band 7 nurse with a real interest in and experience of Women’s Health nursing. You will have knowledge of caring for patients with gynaecological emergencies (including late pregnancy loss) as well as those coming in for elective gynaecology procedures.

The successful candidate will practise clinically, leading, co-ordinating and supervising nursing practice. They will ensure they are a visible, accessible and an assertive figure to whom patients, relatives and staff can turn for assistance, advice and support.

They will be an experienced gynaecology nurse with excellent clinical skills, in addition have a proven track record in teaching and education as well as service improvement and leadership.

Main duties of the job

The post holder carries 24 hour continuing responsibility for the co-ordination and monitoring of all clinical activities within their designated clinical area. They will be expected to maintain high standards of care and be accountable for auditing those standards.

They are expected to ensure that there is efficient and effective utilisation of all resources required to deliver optimum quality care to their patient group.

The Ward Manager will provide advice and support to all staff and will be required to work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team in caring for patients.  They will liaise closely with colleagues in managing the provision of beds and staffing on the gynaecology ward and be responsible for maintaining a suitable and safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

They will drive forward evidence based practice and take responsibility for the supervision and development of staff and the policies and practices that operate within their clinical area.

The post holder will lead initiatives to continuously improve quality and clinical care standards within the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical / Direct Care Practice

The post holder will:

·         Be responsible for the provision of nursing care on the ward 24 hours a day.

·         Be accountable for nursing practice, taking every opportunity to sustain and improve, ensuring high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcome measures.

·         Be a clinical expert recognising deterioration in clinical conditions and initiate a rapid and appropriate response.

·         Practise clinically, leading, co-ordinating and supervising nursing practice. Ensuring that all patients a=have their needs assessed, that programmes of care are developed to meet these needs and are delivered in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.

·         Establish and maintain effective personal relationships with patients and relatives and ensure that the individual’s physical and psychological needs are identified.

·         Communicate with patients at the appropriate level of understanding about issues regarding their medical condition whilst maintaining patient confidentiality. Ensure that they understand the rationale for their care and its consequences and alternatives. Record details of any information given, always maintaining patient confidentiality.

·       Be accountable for identifying the patient’s health education needs and collaboratively implementing programmes of health promotion according to the diagnosis.

·         Use specialist knowledge to assist patients to give Informed Consent by information about their condition, and planned procedure, benefits, risks, complications and effects of the intended procedure, and any alternative treatments. 

·         Ensure patient needs are met by working collaboratively with other professionals and agencies. This includes having a wide knowledge of all the services offered and refer to other health care providers as appropriate.

·         Act as an advocate for the patient in treatment decisions and choices.

  • Registered Nurse
  • Post registration nursing course in speciality
  • Recognized teaching qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Degree or ability to think and practice at degree level with extensive experience
  • Leadership qualification

Experience

  • Substantial experience at Band 6 level
  • People management experience
  • Effective clinical leadership and experience in the management of change
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of caring for couples experiencing pregnancy loss
  • Experience of formal and informal teaching
  • Ability to recognise when help or escalation is needed
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience of data collection and audit
