Job overview

Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist

Band 8a

Offer clinical leadership and advice to Occupational Therapists. Occupational Therapy technicians and Occupational Therapy assistants. 

You will work alongside the Principal Occupational Therapist to develop and continuously improve provision of community occupational therapy to vulnerable adults living in Croydon. 

You will be required to operationally manage and clinically supervise staff within the service (some Senior OTs / Band 7 OTs). This will include allocation of work, prioritising cases and resources, performance, absences (annual leave/sickness/other leave), annual appraisals and provide professional clinical supervision.

You will work with a multi-disciplinary approach as a member of a specialist Occupational Therapy team within intake and duty, integrated locality teams, and the major adaptations unit. You will be expected to work directly with clients who present with complex needs.

Main duties of the job

Day to day operational oversight  and clinical leadership of the Croydon Adult Community Occupational Therapy service. 

This is in line with all relevant legislation but not limited to the Care Act 2014, the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended in 2007), the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act (1996) and the transformation agendas for health and social care.

Job Summary

  • Responsible for the operational management and day to day leadership of a defined clinical area and its’ therapy staff, with delegated responsibility to ensure that performance and budgetary objectives are met.
  • To be a highly visible and proactive leader acting as a clinical resource and ensuring the sustained delivery of high standards of therapy care and service delivery.
  • To be responsible for exploring current practice, identifying areas for development, and planning the appropriate change, as agreed with the Principal Occupational Therapist using current evidence to evaluate outcomes.
  • To be responsible for the quality of the environment in which therapeutic interventions are delivered and lead on facilitating changes, as agreed with the Principal Occupational Therapist  which improve the patients’ experience
  • To play a key operational role and maintain a proactive approach to managing patient flow and activity in order to meet Organisational, Contractual, and service users’ objectives.
  • To ensure that services comply with National and local policy and legislation.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 Managerial and professional

To co-ordinate therapy service delivery within a designated clinical area.

 

To be responsible for delivering identified KPI’s in service area and being responsible for reporting these, via the collection and presentation of statistics to Adult Therapy Heads.

 

To contribute to and lead relevant groups engaged in the delivery of KPI’s at both local service and wider Trust levels. 

 

To be responsible for maintaining an overview of the standards of care being delivered across service area, instigating remedial action to improve practice as necessary highlighting and escalating issues as they arise.

 

Responsible for working with the Principal Occupational Therapist, Adult Therapy Service Heads, and other Clinical Operational leads in assessing the clinical skills required to deliver a safe and high quality service, identifying any deficits in this and developing programmes to address these issues.

 

To be responsible for ensuring that clinical initiatives and service developments become truly embedded in clinical practice and that staff have a clear understanding and opportunity to contribute to the change process.

 

To identify and co-ordinate opportunities for patient and public involvement and engagement in service development, in conjunction with the Principal Occupational Therapist and Adult Therapy Heads.

 

Responsibility for ensuring appropriate escalation/update occurs regarding key clinical and managerial issues affecting service area.

 

To ensure a clear meeting structure exists within areas of responsibility and that both formal and informal lines of communication exist with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

 

To provide strong, visible leadership and support for all therapists within team, enabling staff to ensure that the fundamentals of therapeutic care are correctly and actively in place and those high standards of care are achieved.

 

To support the Principal OT and Adult Therapy Heads ensuring that divisional and corporate objectives in relation to the workforce, service delivery, clinical quality and safety and financial control are monitored and maintained.

 

To be responsible for the ordering and safe use of equipment relevant to clinical area.

 

To be an authorised signatory for ordering of equipment and for expenses and travel claims. Responsible for checking and signing off monthly pay returns.

 

To provide advice and assistance to the Principal Occupational Therapist and Adult Therapy Heads to ensure a safe, reasonable and creative approach to resource management.  Including the scoping of service developments and developing business cases.

 

To develop responsive working relationships with other appropriate agencies to enhance the patient journey with particular reference, internally to PALS and complaints, and externally in relevant local, regional and  National specialist groups.

To deliver activities related to contracts within area as the service and role requires with the support and guidance of the Principal Occupational Therapist . (e.g. Wheelchair maintenance and Nutritional Contracts this is not a full and exhaustive list and will be subject to change dependent on organisational development and role review)

 

To play a key operational role in maintaining patient flow and activity levels throughout the designated service area.

 

To maintain clinical credibility by acting regularly as a clinical practitioner in own area of expertise with a minimum of 40% of WTE spent on this weekly.

 

To maintain personal clinical competence via regular, direct clinical practice and demonstrate participation in current CPD activities via a CPD portfolio.

 

 

 

Communication

 

Work with the Principal Occupational Therapist  and other Clinical Operational Leads and staff to ensure effective communication within Therapy Services and other services/colleagues, as required.

 

Clinical Quality/Health &Safety

 

To maintain a high clinical profile and act as a clinical specialist within recognised clinical area undertaking regular clinical sessions to maintain own practice and to monitor performance of others.

 

To communicate with staff, patients and carers effectively, dealing frequently with difficult and complex situations

 

Responsible for demonstrating continuous improvements in standards of therapy care within areas of accountability.

 

To monitor therapy staffing levels in conjunction with other Clinical Operational Leads and the Adult Therapy Heads, ensuring timely recruitment and appropriate selection of staff. 

 

To assist in identifying and implementing appropriate recruitment and retention initiatives.

 

To work in close association with the other Clinical Operational Leads ensuring joint working, excellent communication and that adequate provision is made for cross cover during periods of leave.

 

To contribute to the design and management of the departmental Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance programs, Operational and Training Plans and support the delivery of the Therapy Service, meeting agreed objectives.

 

To investigate accidents and incidents, identifying and implementing corrective action where necessary, in conjunction with the Principal Occupational Therapist .

 

Responsible for ensuring areas participate in, and are compliant with, divisional and corporate systems and processes in place to address and manage:

 

  • Clinical and Non-clinical risk
  • Staff and Patient complaints
  • Patient and user feedback and involvement/engagement

 

. To ensure that services comply with National/local policy and relevant legislation and statute, and as an autonomous practitioner to inform the Principal Occupational Therapist  and relevant organisational groups (otherwise may circumvent the HOS who is responsible) on required changes of practice required to meet these standards.

 

Staff Management

 

To directly supervise Senior Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapists, providing regular one to one meetings and attending to the individuals professional development.

 

Responsible for ensuring all staff in designated area receive an annual PDR.

 

Clinical Operational leads are responsible for ensuring that all therapists working within their area of responsibility adhere to Trust policies.

 

To participate as required in the recruitment, selection and induction of Therapy staff.

 

Research and Development, Education and Training

 

To ensure that all qualified and non-qualified therapy staff have access to and  receive appropriate training, education, development and appraisal to increase motivation and effectiveness in association with the professional leads. 

 

To encourage practice development and use of evidence based practice within the field of therapies.

 

Accountable for ensuring that education and training objectives for therapists are monitored and maintained in relation to AHP professional standards, NSFs, NICE guidance and evidenced based guidelines in order to meet the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies, in association with the professional leads.
