Join our Band 7 to 8a preceptorship program in our Intellectual Disabilities Service. Gain valuable experience, mentorship, and guaranteed progression to a Band 8a position in just 18 months.
This opportunity is open to newly qualified Clinical Psychologists as well as those who will be qualified by December 2024.
You arrive at our modern offices in Bernard Weatherill House in Croydon on a Monday morning. You have a full caseload working with clients with intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopmental conditions, trauma histories, and mental health issues. Each session demands a unique approach, tailoring therapy from CBT to mindfulness practices. Beyond direct client work, through consultations, you’ll contribute your expertise to shaping best practices, while teaching and training others, empowering the next generation of psychologists. Your expertise will translate into specialist assessments, interventions, and support, making a profound impact on both individuals and the broader mental healthcare landscape.

Main duties of the job
Clinical Psychologist in Learning Disabilities
Band 7 to 8a, Full-time
As a clinical psychologist, joining our Croydon Community Intellectual Disabilities Team, you'll play a key role in supporting adults facing intellectual disabilities, neurodevelopmental conditions, trauma histories, and mental health challenges. You'll conduct comprehensive assessments, develop tailored interventions, and offer ongoing support, drawing on your expertise in these areas. You’ll also be highly experienced in working within a Positive Behaviour Support model.
Leveraging your expertise, you'll shape the future of care in this dynamic field by providing clinical leadership through various avenues. You'll provide expert consultation to the team through insightful teaching and training sessions, ensuring everyone stays current on best practices. You'll also offer valuable supervision, mentoring, and guidance, fostering their professional development and empowering them to deliver exceptional care. Ultimately, you'll play a direct role in shaping the future of this dynamic field, making a tangible impact on patient outcomes and the team's overall success.

Our modern offices are based in Bernard Weatherill House in Croydon, but you’ll be expected to travel across different community sites in the borough to meet with patients. Additionally, our service is co-located with colleagues from adult social care, and we have close working relationships with the Croydon Mental Health in Learning Disabilities Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide a high specialist clinical psychology service within the Community Learning Disability Team (CLDT) including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation, and monitoring of outcomes.
- To take a lead and coordinate some of the multidisciplinary pathways in the CLDT.
- Supervise and support clinical psychological assessment and intervention provided by other psychologists, including recently qualified psychologists, behaviour specialist practitioners, assistant psychologists, and trainee clinical psychologists.
- To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for clinical practice within a current caseload.
- To utilise research skills for audit, policy, service development and clinical research.
- In agreement with the Operational Clinical Lead for Learning Disabilities and Consultant Clinical Psychologist, to propose and implement policy and service changes for the CLDT, Trust and other local partner agencies.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- • Doctorate training in clinical Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS including specifically working with adults with Intellectual Disabilities, formulation , clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
- • Registered with the HCPC
Desirable criteria
- Post-doctoral training in one or more other additional specialised areas of psychological practice relevant to learning disability services (e.g. systemic, PBS…)
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Essential criteria
- • Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including specifically working with adults with intellectual disabilities, formulation, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
- • Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for adults with intellectual disabilities with complex needs (Autism, trauma, mental health needs…)
- • Knowledge of legislation, policy and professional guidance relevant to Learning disability services and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management.
- • Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to the role.
Desirable criteria
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of positive behaviour support.
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- • Experience of working as a qualified clinical psychologist with people with intellectual disabilities presenting with a range of clinical needs.
- Experience of maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive situations.
- • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and interventions both professionally and within the context of multidisciplinary care planning.
- • Experience of providing teaching, training and professional /clinical supervision.
- • Experience of undertaking research, service evaluation and audit and dissemination of findings.
