Job overview

We have a part-time 0.8WTE Band 7 post (or Band 6 developmental post)  within our Parkinson’s Day Unit at Edgware Community Hospital in Barnet and are looking for a skilled, motivated and enthusiastic Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist ( Neurology)

The Parkinson’s service offers variety and opportunity to develop the range of your clinical and supervisory skills in the treatment and management of Parkinson’s, as well as joint working with a range of medical and therapy professionals in a purpose built unit; there are also opportunities to contribute to service development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·        To provide a highly specialist neurological Occupational Therapy (OT) Service as part of the Parkinson’s Multi-disciplinary Team.

·      Work autonomously and in collaboration with the specialist Parkinson’s team and other health care professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies to deliver excellent standards of patient care.

·        Take a lead for occupational therapy in the rehab program of People with neurological conditions and Parkinson’s Disease.

·  Assess and treat own caseload of clients who have a diagnosis of Idiopathic  Parkinson’s/Parkinson’s Syndrome and other neurological conditions

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Current AHP with UK HCPC registration
  • Post-graduate training in Approaches to Rehabilitation/Cognitive rehabilitation/Neurological rehabilitation or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Masters level study

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate experience working in Neuro Parkinson’s disease /rehabilitation and Community services
  • Experience in working collaboratively across agencies in planning care for people
  • Experience in assessing for assistive technology including wheelchairs and Activities Daily Living equipment equipment
  • Experience in planning complex discharges, co-ordinating services and resources
  • Experience in working with adults in their own home
  • Experience of supervising/managing junior and assistant staff
Desirable criteria
  • Rotational experience at Band 5 or Band 6 level in acute trusts and community services
  • Experience in working with people with complex health and social issues

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Advanced skills in the assessment and treatment of people with Neurological/ Parkinson’s Disease and other multi-pathologies
  • • Advanced knowledge and understanding of the national guidelines for National Service Frameworks for Older People, Long Term Conditions and relevant NICE guidelines
  • Experience in leading a team
  • Experience of appraising staff
  • Knowledge of philosophy and key issues within the profession
  • Actively promotes OT services within multi disciplinary teams (MDT)
  • Skills in managing complex cases and advising other staff on management of Neurological/Parkinson’s conditions
  • Ability to work as part of a MDT
  • Knowledge of moving and handling legislation and procedures
  • Providing risk assessments and care plans in moving and handling
  • Knowledge or range of assistive technology and its application
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with clients and carers
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve in a creative manner and to make clear and realistic decisions with clients and their carers
  • Able to consider recommendations that deliver value for money
  • Knowledge of key legislation within health and social care service
  • Knowledge of care rehabilitation techniques
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in recent NHS Leadership training programme or similar
