We have been working together in a Partnership between Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for some time, with a single Chair and Chief Executive since 2021 and single Executive Team since 2022. We launched our North London Mental Health Partnership Strategy in May 2023 and in July 2023 our Boards agreed that coming together to create one new Trust is best for our service users, our staff and our local communities. Subject to final approvals, we will be formally established as one new Trust on 1 October 2024.

Job overview
The role will involve:
• The assessment of working age and older adults attending the Accident and Emergency Department, and in-patients on the wards with mental health problems; the focus will be on older adults and ward patients.
• To support clinical staff in North Mid University Hospital working with patients with mental health problems.
• Developing and promoting the occupational therapy role within the team/service.
• Developing and promoting the liaison psychiatry service.
• Delivering training on mental health topics specific to occupational therapy and/or older adults.
• Supervision and support of liaison psychiatry colleagues, and clinical supervision of therapy colleagues in mental health services.
The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:
· Substantial clinical experience working with older adults with mental health conditions
· Occupational Therapy qualification and relevant professional registration
· Evidence of continuous professional development
· Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with acute trust colleagues
· An in-depth understanding of mental health services, assessments and interventions for a range of mental health conditions.
· An excellent communicator and team player
· Working with the RCRP model
Main duties of the job
To provide occupational therapy input to the liaison psychiatry service by providing occupational therapy assessments and interventions for those referred to the team. This will primarily be with older adults in Accident & Emergency and on the inpatient wards. There will also be an expectation to complete generic mental health assessments for people presenting with a range of mental health problems.
The post holder will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team, acute trust colleagues, and local services i.e. community mental health teams, memory assessment service, social services etc.
The post holder will be expected to promote person-centred care, support timely and safe discharges from assessment and admission wards, and participate in planned reviews of inpatients.

In order to meet the needs of the new Partnership services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Enfield and Harringay Trust and Camden and Islington Trust. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Administrative duties
- Maintain clear and effective clinical records, using the Trust’s electronic patient information system, including progress notes, risk assessment and clustering, in accordance with Trust policy
- Maintain own personal and professional status by ensuring the requirements laid down by the relevant registration authority are met, eg renewal of registration and continuity of professional development
- To ensure regular completion of patient and carer surveys and processing of results
- To assist in the development and monitoring of data bases for patient information
- To assist with collection of information for audit purposes
- To assist with compilation of patient information relating to BMS
- To undertake specific administrative duties as required
Teaching Training and Supervision:
- Receive both managerial and clinical supervision, in accordance with professional practice guidelines
- To undertake and develop the appropriate skills of practice to widen professional scope, ensuring a period of training and in line with approved policies and procedures
- Provide supervision to junior staff, as required
- To ensure up to date competency and skills required for the delivery of current duties
- To contribute to the training and support of other staff in occupational therapy related topics and other topics as required
- To be conversant with current occupational therapy training and supervise occupational therapy students on clinical placement as required
- To ensure a conducive learning environment for all staff in the service and review the through audit in consultation with the team leader and occupational therapy departments/university.
- To promote the importance of Health Education to staff, patients and their carers. To ensure a good display of materials to increase public awareness of these issues
- To attend staff development sessions/days and team away days as required by the team leader and service manager and provide evidence of continuing professional development
- To develop skills and competencies required for the delivery of current duties and update as required
- To attend mandatory training relevant to role and ensure this is up to date at all times
- To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes in consultation with the post holders, operational and professional managers
Service Development
- To assist in the design and implementation of service development projects, as required
- To attend meetings in which service developments are discussed and contribute to the same, as appropriate.
Research and Service Evaluation
- To assist in the design and implementation of audit and service based research projects
- To undertake data collection, analysis and the production of reports summaries using IT and statistical programs
- To undertake searches of evidence based literature to assist in providing a basis for evidence-based practise in the occupational therapy aspects of the work of the team.
Technical
- Planning and organisation of range of activities for Cognitive Stimulation Groups and facilitation of these groups
General
- To contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes in consultation with the managers
- To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing in accordance with the professional codes of conduct and procedures
- To perform other duties of a similar kind appropriate to the grade, this may be required from time to time by their managers.
Communication
- To deal with sensitive and confidential information relating to patients and carers on a daily basis and observe Trust policies and procedures in so doing
- To communicate with patients, carers and colleagues in a clear and effective way, demonstrating awareness of their needs in relation to this
- To communicate views in meetings in clear and considered way
- To represent service as required and communicate clearly aspects of service, as required
Patient Care
- To demonstrate good awareness of needs of patients and carers through face to face contact and telephone contact, as well as in professional meetings
- To ensure referrals to other services are made, where appropriate, in order to ensure excellent care
- To ensure patients’ views are taken into account and encourage their feedback whenever possible
Information management
- To create reports for service, as required.
- To oversee waiting lists for some aspects of service, as required
Service Development
- To contribute to service development by sharing views and knowledge and experience
- To contribute to service protocols by sharing views and knowledge and experience
Resource Management
- To highlight needs for resources for service for team leaders, eg materials for Cognitive Stimulation Therapy
Systems and Equipment
- To ensure a sound knowledge of the working systems of the service and guide other staff as required
- To ensure good understanding of use of all equipment required for this post.
Efforts, Mental and Environment
- To be able to concentrate on and understand the concerns of patients and carers and feed these back to relevant personnel in a clear and concise way
- To be able to manage distress of patients and carers in a helpful and professional way.
- To be able to stand for extended periods of time, eg when facilitating groups and able to sit for extended periods of times, often using a computer.
Person specification
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in occupational therapy. HCPC registered occupational therapist.
Desirable criteria
- Additional study.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Post qualification experience in mental health, with some experience of working with older people. Establishing own professional role within a multidisciplinary team. Managing a caseload. Utilising a range of assessments and interventions for people with memory problems, as applied to individuals, carers/families and groups.
- Knowledge of occupational therapy models of practice and their application to mental health of older people. Knowledge of a range of assessment tools and approaches suitable to mental health practice with older people.
Desirable criteria
- Working with other agencies statutory and voluntary.
- Experience of working with dementia.
- Supervising student and/or staff.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Essential criteria
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in individual and group situations. Well organised and computer literate.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working with computer databases and spreadsheets.
PERSONAL QUALITIES
Essential criteria
- Work autonomously as well as effectively within a team.
