Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust is responsible for providing mental health services for people of all ages across the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, as well as providing some specialist services across the whole of North London and beyond. Since January 2011, the Trust also provides adult and children’s community health services in Enfield, following the transfer of Enfield Community Services from NHS Enfield.

Job overview

There is an exciting opportunity within the North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) for a full-time Specialty Doctor to join the Enfield Acute Adult Services based in Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield. The role is based on Cumbria villa ward which is a 15-bedded mixed sex psychiatric transition and recovery ward at Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield. The post is now available on a substantive basis following the service being established in October 2024.

Main duties of the job

. This post offers 10 Programmed Activities per week (8PAs for DCC and 2PAs for SPA), with sessions embedded in the timetable for clinical supervision, Quality Improvement work and access to the Trust-wide weekly academic programme. The post holder will be the principal junior medical professional on the ward and work directly with the Consultant Psychiatrist. The post holder will have an integral role in the performance of the team; clerking new patients, regularly reviewing their mental states and performing essential physical health tasks and examinations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be required to provide clinical and professional input to their team and to take part in related service development activities alongside the consultant and manager. The post will offer the opportunity to perform clinical assessments of individuals with mental health problems including mental state examination, history taking, and attendance of meetings with the multidisciplinary team. Additional opportunities with regards to Mental Health Act Assessments, tribunal report writing and attendance as well as leading of MDT meetings/work.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise from the GMC by the intended start date
Desirable criteria
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in psychiatry (its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies in psychiatric specialties
  • Other postgraduate qualification of relevance
  • Section 12 approval

  • Eligibility to work in the UK

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous medical or psychiatric experience in foundation training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in adult acute inpatient psychiatry including clinical attachment in psychiatry in UK
  • Experience working in the NHS
  • Previous evidence of an interest in psychiatry

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal, non-verbal and written
  • Excellent skills in assessing physical health and undertake physical examination and blood tests
  • Assessing and prioritising patient needs Excellent IT skills for timely record keeping on electronic records
  • Willing to take instructions and work flexibly
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural society
