Job overview

The post is available for a period of 12 months to cover a planned expansion of service.

The post offers the opportunity to join the team of Immunology Department at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This is the largest UK centre specialising in Primary and Secondary Immunodeficiency (PID and SID). The post offers excellent clinical experience in the assessment and management of a complex immunodeficiency. The position would provide valuable experience for a trainee considering a career in Immunology but would also be relevant for other specialties, including Infectious Diseases and Respiratory Medicine.

The job will be outpatient based, contributing to specialist Immunology clinics and assessment of patients requiring day case and inpatient investigation or management. The applicant will be expected to contribute to the general running of the service but there is no commitment to routine ward cover and no on call requirement. There will be opportunities to gain experience in specialist clinics, including Chronic Granulomatous Disease, Transition and Young Adult and assessment of PID patients for Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant.

Main duties of the job

To work closely within the Immunology team to deliver an integrated service to patients with PID and SID, including multi-disciplinary input from respiratory medicine, infectious diseases, haematology, gastroenterology, hepatology and dermatology. This will include participation in all of the Immunology Department’s clinical activities, including outpatient clinics, day ward and providing advice to treating physicians and to patients.

Working for our organisation

The Department of Immunology provides a comprehensive, predominantly outpatient-based clinical service with a focus on primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) and a growing provision for secondary immunodeficiencies. In addition, the Department provides multiple highly specialist outpatient clinics including chronic granulomatous disease, young adults, complement disorders and assessment plus follow up of haematopoietic stem cell transplant for PID patients. A number of joint clinics are held with respiratory, gastroenterology, hepatology and dermatology colleagues. With Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Trust the Department forms the UCL Centre of Primary Immunodeficiency, linking clinical and research activities at Great Ormond Street and Royal Free Hospital. In 2009 the Centre received a Jeffrey Modell Foundation award to become an international centre of excellence for Primary Immunodeficiency.

The Department of Immunology is part of the Immunity Directorate within the Division of Infection, Immunity, Rare Diseases and Outpatients.  The Divisional Clinical Director is Dr Parag Jasani, the Head of Nursing is Ms Florence Kabambe and the Senior Operations Manager is Mr Louis Hackman.  The laboratory services sit within the Directorate of Pathology, for which the Clinical Director is Dr Dhili Arul.
