Main duties of the job
We are looking for a nuclear medicine technologist with, ideally, both general nuclear medicine as well as PET/CT experience to join our dynamic team of technologists and radiographers.
Royal Free Nuclear Medicine is a busy department within a large teaching hospital in North London by Hampstead Heath. We have three Siemens gamma cameras, two of which are SPECT/CT, two recently installed Siemens PET/CT scanners, one being the UK's first Vision Quadra, long axial field of view scanner.
We have a nationally renown radionuclide therapy service, bone densitometry service, invitro lab and radiopharmacy unit. Many of our services are technologist/radiographer led and we are supported by our colleagues; all part of a department of 50+ staff, made up of doctors, physicists, administrators, radiopharmacy staff and technologists/radiographers.
The successful candidate must work well in a team environment, be willing to work at times under pressure and represent the department and the Trust utilising the World Class Care values.

- BTEC/SCOTVEC/HNC or degree or equivalent in an appropriate scientific subject
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrated experience of scientific/technical work in a clinical environment
- Demonstrated experience of technical work in clinical Nuclear Medicine
- Demonstrated experience of technical work in PECT/CT
- Experience in Nuclear Medicine image analysis
Skills and aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Practical efficacy with expensive, manually operated and computer-controlled clinical equipment to perform imaging investigations on the full range of patients referred to the Nuclear Medicine service
- Understanding of the technical details necessary to perform PET/CT scans and routine Nuclear Medicine studies with computer interface, including computer analysis, quality control and computer based booking system
- Proven track record of competence in work involving patient care
- Able to work in accordance with Local Rules, relevant legislation, codes of practice and Regulations relating to the use of radioactive material, including the Ionising Radiations Regulations of 1999 and 2000 and the Medicines Act and the Radioactive Substances Act
Desirable criteria
- Proven track record of competence drawing up and administering i.v. injections and in the use of unsealed radioactive sources
- Ability to work in and assist with radiopharmacy
- Ability to carry out radiation monitoring and decontamination if necessary
- Ability to use sterile technique in radio-labelling cells, blood products and peptides
- Ability to carry out laboratory based radionuclide tests, including Glomerular Filtration Rate

- Able to demonstrate an ability to provide leadership to staff and able to effectively handle complaints and grievances
- Ability to identify problems at a staff, clinical or operational level and take corrective action especially in matching workload to resources available

- Able to work continuously in a radiation area and manipulate heavy items associated with this
- Ability to deal with and manipulate patient body fluids and body odours

Mental & Emotional

- Able to operate frequently at high concentration levels, especially calculating doses and patient information
