Main duties of the job
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical fellow (Fetal Medicine) post (ST3-7 level) at the Royal Free Hospital NHS Trust at the Royal Free, Hampstead site. This post starts in October 2024. This post is initially for a 6-month period but could be extended by mutual agreement and on satisfactory performance.
The successful candidate will also be contributing to the on-call rota and hence competence on labour ward at a senior level (ST3-7) is essential.
Working for our organisation
The Royal Free maternity unit provides services for approximately 8500 births annually (across its’ two delivery units at Royal Free Hampstead and Barnet sites).
We are looking for a Senior Clinical Fellow to join our vibrant and stimulating Department at the Royal Free Hospital. The Trust was a founder member of UCL Partners - an academic health science partnership which now has over 40 higher education and NHS members. So, in addition to well supervised clinical experience, this post will provide a unique opportunity for a hardworking, ambitious doctor to enhance their CV and develop their career.
The successful candidate will work alongside the 3 Consultants in the Fetal Medicine Unit and will have the opportunity to train in advanced obstetric ultrasound, fetal and uterine doppler studies, First Trimester Screening and invasive procedures. There are daily Fetal Medicine sessions supported by Consultants, Clinical Fellows and Sonographers. With the incorporation of Barnet Hospital into the Trust, the work of FMU is expanding to serve the Barnet Obstetric cases. There is opportunity to complete the ATSM in Fetal Medicine as previous post holders have achieved. The work of the FMU is supported by 3 specialist midwives and an HCA.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidates will join a team of 16 Registrars/clinical fellows (including 3 FMU fellows) on a 1 in 8 oncall rota.
Oncall cover during the day is provided by an onsite Consultant (8-9.30pm weekdays and 8-2pm weekends), 1 senior registrar/CF (ST6-7 level), 1 junior registrar (ST3-5 level), 1 ST1-2/FY2 Dr for obstetrics and 1 ST1-2/FY2 Dr for Gynaecology. At night time the unit is staffed onsite by 1 senior registrar/CF (ST6-7) and 1 junior registrar (ST3-5 level) with the Consultant oncall available to attend from home.
Other occasional job duties will include general obstetrics and gynaecology clinics, including Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic, Labour Ward sessions and emergency gynaecology cover.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Current full GMC Registration
- Previous experience working in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (in the NHS/UK at senior level is desirable)
- Experience in assessing and managing common obstetric and acute gynaecology emergencies
- EffCompletion of CTG K2 package (or similar training)
- Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values
Desirable criteria
- Previous scanning experience
- Recent ALS Training
