Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist Neurosciences (0.6 wte)
We have an exciting opportunity has arisen within our neurosciences therapy team for a Band 7 Speech-Language Therapist. The post is permanent and 0.6 wte (22.5 hours per week).
This post will offer an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and experienced speech and language therapist to join the neurosciences therapy and SLT team at the Royal Free Hospital.
The acute neurosciences is a 28 bedded ward comprised of 18 acute stroke beds and 10 acute neuro beds. The post holder will over see the day – day running and support the 2 SLTs who are based on the ward. They will also hold their own clinical caseload made up of patients on the neurosciences ward, complex neuro outliers and tracheostomised patients. A key part of this role is participation in the weekly, multidisciplinary team tracheostomy ward round.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- provide clinical leadership to a highly specialised therapy service working in partnership with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to deliver excellent outcomes
- be part of a team of senior SLT’s working within specialty groups that include Health Services for Elderly People (HSEP), neurosciences and critical Care / respiratory teams..
- be responsible for providing highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adult patients in an acute setting
- support the Clinical Lead Speech and Language therapists, to ensure the development of collaborative and multidisciplinary team working practices and to assist in achieving Trust and national government targets.
You will be joining a team of 11.6 other SLT’s on site. You will be well supported with opportunities for peer support and access to joint working with clinical leads. You will be offered opportunities for personal and professional development. The Speech and Language Therapy team run both videofluoroscopy and FEES instrumental assessment services and the post holder will be expected to be able to take a lead role in these assessments and manage patients with tracheostomies.
Therapy Services at the Royal Free are truly interdisciplinary with a strong emphasis on active learning, development, and staff wellness. You will be well supported by the Clinical Lead SLT for Neurosciences Band 8a

Essential criteria
- • Degree/ graduate diploma or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy
- • Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a speech and language therapist
- • Certificated graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty areas
- • Membership of relevant RCSLT Clinical Excellence Network (CEN
Desirable criteria
- • Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

- • Knowledge and clinical experience in stroke/neurology
- • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches for the management of patients with acute, chronic and progressive neurological conditions

- • Broad range of clinical experience at a Band 6 level or above including neurosciences, complex swallow and communication
- • Tracheostomy management
- • Experience with videofluoroscopy interpretation and clinical reporting.

- • Evidence of post graduate training / study in clinical area
