Senior Dental Officer – 0.8 wte
We are looking for enthusiastic dental professionals to join our dynamic community dental team at Whittington Health. We are a large organisation providing paediatric and special care dentistry across ten boroughs in north London. You will work alongside our dedicated team including specialists, therapists, and oral health promoters, in fully equipped clinics and be well-supported by an experienced nursing and management team. Dental care is carried out in our modern clinics , on a domiciliary basis, or in hospital sites. You will have opportunities to develop your skills and interests in the areas of paediatric and special care dentistry.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be responsible for the provision of high quality special care dentistry to patients referred to the service.
Much of the post will involve providing clinical care but there will also be responsibilities in the areas of clinical governance, training, management and supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide specialist clinical care to patients with additional or special care needs at Level 2 and above.
- To provide clinical care under sedation when required and following further training if required
- To demonstrate professional and clinical leadership in the clinical setting in providing treatment safely and to a high standard
- To provide clinical care for other CDS patients, according to the needs of the service
- To comply with all relevant professional and Trust policies, guidelines and standards including mandatory training, health and safety and infection control
- To provide clinical care, when required, in health centres other than their base clinic, and in other settings such as care homes and hospitals
- To work with others in the health, local authority and voluntary sectors to raise awareness of the oral health needs of adults and children with special needs, promote oral health and to improve access to dental services

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BDS
- Full registration with the General Dental Council
- Eligible for Performers List
- Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to special care dentistry and compliance with GDC requirements for recertification
Desirable criteria
- A relevant postgraduate qualification relating to special care dentistry or evidence of working towards this
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in the clinical management of a wide range of special care patients
Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing dental treatment under IV sedation
- Experience of providing dental treatment under general anaesthesia
- Experience of either assessing, appraising or managing staff
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- High quality general dental clinical skills in care of adults
- Ability to manage difficult or challenging behaviours in patients, including use of sedation techniques and clinical holding
- Ability to assess capacity and implement MCA procedures
- Knowledge of medical conditions relevant to the practice of dentistry and how they should be managed
- Ability to liaise with others in providing care for patients
- Good interpersonal and liaison skills
- An understanding of the concept and effect of inequality as it relates to oral health
- Knowledge of health promotion and preventive strategies
- Knowledge of good practice, clinical developments and evidence-based dentistry
- An understanding of clinical governance issues in community dentistry
- Knowledge of service priorities and contractual targets and supporting others to achieve them
