Job overview

This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant Urologist Core Urology and special interest in bladder cancer at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital. The post will be based at our new BHRUT Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital and Queens Hospital cross-site working.

The successful applicant will be expected to complement the current workforce working closely with colleagues and managers with the aim of decreasing the waiting list for core urology.   They will support the current delivery of core urology/bladder services.

The aim of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital, Surgical Division is to become a world leader in the field of surgical management through innovation, evidence based safe and effective patient care and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

The urology service is dynamic and undergoing significant change and improvement with scope for further input and contribution. The post-holder will also be expected to continue developing the bladder cancer service. This Trust covers a large population serving the Northeast London and Essex catchment area, with a need for an emergency and elective service, working closely with the local tertiary centre, and supporting the specialist nurses. This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are at the forefront of clinical management.

Main duties of the job

Barking Havering and Redbridge University Trust is seeking to appoint a suitably trained individual to provide emergency and elective surgery with special interest in bladder cancer.  The post holder would be expected to complement the current workforce in working to clear the backlog of core urology patients.  The elective sessions are undertaken at our King George Hospital site and emergency work at Queens Hospital.  The consultant would be expected to participate in the provision of acute and elective core/general urology services to the Northeast London and Essex catchment area.  This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which Clinicians are the forefront of managing patient care.

The unit is dynamic and undergoing significant change and improvement with scope for further input and contribution.  We have a fast-developing bladder cancer service with a one stop haematuria clinic providing quick and efficient bladder cancer diagnosis. We also have started a TULA (Transurethral Laser Ablation) service.  We can treat small bladder cancer and red patches locally under flexible cystoscopy guidance.  In order to make service more efficient our aim is to appoint a Consultant Urology Surgeon focusing on superficial bladder cancer and management of the high-risk tumours.  We have excellent links with University College London and good pathways for muscle invasive bladder cancer which can be further streamlined.

Working for our organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

We’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change. We are tackling the backlog in many ways including having super-clinics in the evening and weekends.

We carried out more than 12,000 surgeries in 2021 in our Covid secure ‘green zone’ at King George Hospital. In the same year, we completed more than 100,000 CT and MRI scans.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
