Job overview
The Specialty Doctor may be required to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Gastroenterology Service. Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however, exceptional and Trust Doctors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. In emergency situations the Trust doctor may be asked to provide on-call cover. There is also the opportunity to work on the on call medical rota to maintain general medical competencies if this is required or to work towards being on the GI bleed rota.
Excellent communication and team-working skills are essential.
Main duties of the job
Key duties of the post
The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants working across the Gastroenterology Department.
The post holder will support the Gastroenterology department:
To participate in various outpatient activities including the medical management of patients attending outpatient clinics and participation in Endoscopy sessions.
Ensuring the effective organisation of the ward including diagnosis and treatment of all patients admitted. In reach to Acute assessment unit will also be required.
The appropriate discharge of patients, including providing timely paperwork to the General Practitioner ensuring a continuation of care following discharge.
The direct clinical supervision and training of the Ward Junior Medical Staff as well as the organisation and delegation of clinical work.
The monitoring of the quality of service given by Gastroenterology which will include clinical audits.
Active participation at various committees and working groups.
Participation in development of medical treatment protocols.
Working for our organisation
The post holder will be an integral part of the team supporting 8 Consultant Gastroenterologists, 3 IBD Nurse Specialists, and a well-organised Upper GI Cancer team working closely with Royal Marsden Hospital. The post holder will be expected to help look after the 23 bed Gastroenterology Ward and provide occasional support to the co-located Medical Day Unit. The role involves 2.5 Gastroenterology / Hepatology clinics per week and regular endoscopy lists. There will be sufficient further opportunity to develop endoscopy skills in our new endoscopy unit.

The post holder will also:
Be supervised under consultant guidance aiming to encourage the development of all doctors within the Division
Contributing to the provision of reports for the Coroner, Police Statements and for Complaints management adhering to time frames.
Demonstrating an involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit.
Contributing to collaborating with Clinical colleagues.
Ensuring own practice is up to date.
This will include taking responsibility for own clinical professional development and participation in the Trust wide appraisal system.
Complying with data protection.
Complying with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Minimum 4 years post graduate experience with at least 2 years in the specialty
Desirable criteria
- Previous significant experience in Gastroenterology
JAG Accreditation
Essential criteria
- Full JAG accreditation for diagnostic Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy
Desirable criteria
- GI Bleed rota experience
Profiessional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GMC registration and license to practice ACLS or ALS
- Full MRCP certification
