Family Liaison Sister

Job overview

We are looking for a Band 7 nurse to join our Family Liaison team on the Paediatric and  Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Family Liaison Team provides practical and emotional support to parents, carers and  other family members as well as to staff on PICU and NICU. They also provide extensive family bereavement support (particularly within the role of Bereavement Key Worker) and follow up care.

They work closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide effective nursing leadership, expertise, advice and holistic support to PICU and NICU and ensure the provision of high quality care to babies, children, young people and their families.

The Family liaison team also provide specialist advice and education to staff across the Trust in relation to family support during end of life care.

Ideally, you will come to us with experience at Band 6 or Band 7 level in ICU with the ability to lead and manage a team. Knowledge of the demands of an ICU are essential as well as an understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing and healthcare.

You will be supported by the PICU and NICU Matron as well as the broader FLN team. There are many opportunities for academic and professional development.

Main duties of the job

 To provide effective nursing leadership, expertise, advice and psychosocial support to families on intensive care to ensure the provision of high quality care to children and families. 
 To facilitate referral to appropriate support services within the whole psychosocial team. 
 To act as a designated support resource to children and families and other professionals caring for them. 
 To provide family bereavement support and follow up care. 
 To fulfil the role of Bereavement Key Worker for bereaved families, acting as a point of contact, signpost them to services and guide them through the Child Death Review process
 To facilitate the development of all staff within the intensive care team in the support of families in intensive care. 
 To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient and family centred care through research and evidence based practice. 
 To work in close co-operation with and communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and outside agencies. 
 To contribute to long term patient management and discharge planning. 
 To supervise and support the volunteers on NICU/PICU.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
