Job overview

  • During training, the post holder will be practicing autonomously within their agreed scope of practice, stage of training and level of competence to provide patient-centred quality care. This will encompass the skills of advanced assessment, examination, diagnosis and management.
  • The ACP educational programme will blend academic university study with the acquisition of work-based clinical learning. 
  • The successful candidate will be fully supported to undertake a Post Graduate Diploma/MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. After successful completion of agreed objectives the post holder will progress to a band 8a ACP.
  • To work within the Multi-professional framework for advanced clinical practice in England (HEE 2017).
  • The post holder will deliver an 80% clinical component to their role and 20% related to leadership and management, education and research.

Main duties of the job

Main duties/key results areas and responsibilities

Clinical and professional

·         Autonomously work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of advanced assessment methods as appropriate (e.g. history taking, physical examination, identifying risk factors, mental health assessments) according to level of training, competence and scope of practice

·         Use decision-making skills to inform clinical reasoning approaches when dealing with differentiated and undifferentiated individual presentations synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate, evidence-based judgements and/or diagnoses

 

Leadership and management

·         Assess effectiveness of care delivery through self and peer review, benchmarking and formal evaluation

·         Participate in the maintenance of quality governance systems and processes across the organisation and its activities

 

Education and training

·         To successfully complete a Post Graduate Diploma/MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice

·         To successfully complete relevant work-based assessments and clinical competencies relevant to role

 

Audit and Research

·         Develop a special interest within certain areas to allow the sharing of clinical knowledge and expertise

·         Contribute to the development of multidisciplinary research and clinical audit, implementing effective and evidence based practice

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Registered clinical professional
  • BSc/1st Degree
  • High level of work organisation, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement, and flexibility in approach and attitude
  • Teaching & Assessing Qualification
  • Specialist training, experience and short courses relevant to PICU
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as clinical Leader
  • Experience of service development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 5 years post registration experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience within PICU
  • Clinical Leadership Experience
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in an autonomous practice role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk assessment
  • Up to date knowledge of evidence based guidelines and policies

SKILLS

  • Diagnostic reasoning skills
