Clinical Nurse Specialist - Paediatric/Young Adult IBD

Band 7

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse with knowledge of caring for children and young adults with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to work with both the Paediatric Gastroenterology service and Adult IBD services at The Royal London Hospital.

The Royal London Children’s Hospital is a specialist tertiary paediatric hospital with 109 inpatient beds and cots. New IBD patients are diagnosed on a weekly basis, and we currently care for approximately 150 patients receiving intravenous biologics on our day-care ward.

The successful candidate will require excellent communication skills and will be expected to work autonomously, with the support of the multi-disciplinary team. They will be part of a wider team of clinical nurse specialists in both Paediatrics and Adults. They should have previous CNS experience of caring for patients with IBD and an interest in working with a specialist team. They will demonstrate a willingness to enhance their skills and knowledge to support the IBD Nursing Service and the vision and enthusiasm to contribute to the specialist nursing service and its patients.

The IBD service at The Royal London Hospital provides high-quality, patient-focused care to children and young adults with IBD. We are one of only 2 centres with a dedicated Young Adult Clinic, meeting the specific and individual needs of this unique patient group.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric and Young Adult IBD CNS will deliver a seamless service and provide the highest level of expert nursing care to children and young people with IBD, and their families, in line with agreed standards including the National Service Framework for Children and NICE guidelines.

The post holder will be the named professional for the transition process from paediatric to adult IBD services. The post holder will care for patients from the paediatric service and into the young adult IBD service (up to 24 years old).

The post holder will develop and maintain a nurse led Immunosuppressant and Biologics service for Paediatrics and actively contribute to this in the Young Adult service.

The post holder will assist in the continued development of the Paediatric IBD service and work in close conjunction with the named Paediatric and Adult Gastroenterologists.

The post holder will ensure that the aims and objectives of the Paediatric and Young Adult IBD service are delivered and implemented to continually improve the standard of care that children and young adults receive.

The post holder will be an advocate for children and young people with IBD and their families, promoting child focused, family centered care and act as a resource for the multi-disciplinary team (MDT). This will include supporting young adults and their family in an adult ward environment.
